95 explorer won't start

Hi Everyone, I had a question about a 95 explorer I just picked up for parts. It was hit in the nose, on the driver's side, pretty bad, airbags deployed and all, and I was trying to see if I could get it to start, this way I could hear the engine run, and if it runs good I was gonna take it out, but if I can't get it running, it will go to the junk yard. Anyway, I can get it to crank nice and strong, I can hear the fuel pump running, but it doesnt even sputter, nothing at all. So I was wondering if there is something else I should be looking for that is accident related, I know that most Fords have that enertia switch that you have to reset, but I don't think I have to because I can hear the fuel pump running, and to be honest with you all, I don't even know where that switch is on an explorer. The only other thing that I found was that valve (I think for the EGR system) that is under the battery tray is busted open, but I wouldnt think that would prevent it from running, I would think that it would just run crappy. I wanna run the codes on it, but all I have is an OBD2 scanner and it won't read the codes, I guess cause 95 is OBD1. Well, thats the story with me, I am about ready to say screw it and just junk the engine when I get done stripping the truck. If anyone has any ideas, I am open to ssuggestions.

my 98 has an inertia switch, its under the carpet in the passenger side front floorboard area, i think its up under the dash. not sure what exactly it shuts off but that would be a good place to start. if it wont scan codes, then maybe the ecm is toast. check fuses and look for shorts. i would think 95 would be obd2, but im not 100% sure. im under the logic that since its a 95, and all 95-01 explorers are basically the same, it should have obd2

Yea, it gets triggered under harsh jerks or sudden stops, like hitting something. Prevent fire.

Your inertia switch is fine if you hear the fuel pump running. The 95 is OBDI/EECIV with the connector under the hood. It has a dummy OBDII connector under the dash that is not functional. Try squirting some ether into the intake and see if it will run for a second or two. If so, then your problem is probably fuel related but I would rule out the fuel pump, inertial switch, and FP relay. Was it hit hard enough to crimp the fuel line near the FP filter? Also, check the pressure at the regulator.

Yea, I agree, it is definietly getting fuel, I cycled the key a couple of times then pushed the valve in on the fuel rail and fuel squirted out, so then I poked around so more, and pulled the battery and the tray out and found a smashed.... what I think is a spark control module, it is attached to the inner radiator support behind the battery and I traced out the some of the wires and they went to the 4 wires on the coil pack. So I am guessing I will have to replace that in order to see if the engine will run. I really don't want to have to buy this thing though, like I said before, the truck is just a parts truck, and honestly I don't know if it is worth playing around with the engine anymore, I might just junk the truck with the engine in it, the more weight the better. My wife's 96 has the OHV engine in it and I figure if I ever spin a bearing or something I would probably wanna rebuild it, I don't really know if there was maintenance done to the parts truck engine and by the looks of the truck, I wouldnt guess there was. Now I just have to decide what parts are valuable enough to pull from the engine. So anyhow, thats my story, now I just have to make some decisions. Jack

Depending on the mileage, it may be worth trying to part out the trans also.

The cam and crank sensors for the 95 are worth some pretty good$$$$$ to the right person. The cam sensor didn't exist on a 94 and changed in 96, and the crank sensor was for one year only and changed.

The crank sensor for my 95 was $250.00 and for a 96 it is under $30.00. The cam sensor for a 95 (new from Ford) can be as high as $900.00, so a working used one is still worth a decent buck.

If you were thinking of keeping the 95 to swap into your wife's truck, get ready for some frustrations. The plugs are different for those two sensors, so you will have to change the plugs and wiring in the truck as the sensors will not fit them, and the sensors from the 96 block will not fit the 95. Also you may run into flywheel issues.
