That is correct. The D44 uses a different carrier for 3.92 and numerically higher gears(4.10, 4.56, 4.88, etc). The 9" uses the same for all gears.

These new brackets should be available this Monday, as soon as they are available I am going to order a set for my explorer
The arms and frame brackets will come together as a kit, the new frame brackets are being made of 5/16" instead of 1/4" and will fit the frame of Explorer, the new brackets should be ready by end of the week. I will keep you posted

2 things...
first, what is the differecne between the two carriers? i ran into the same comment. i have 4.88's for my d44 and was planning on using the factory carrier but was told not too.

second, off subject. i want to keep updated about this attica run 97 V8 and mynameisaric are talking about. i live in perrysburg, ohio(1 hr north of lima) and hope to have my sas done for the spring jamboree next month.

thanks. you ought to try going to the jambo. i went last year. it was crazy. i am hoping to get a deal on some tires. national tire and wheel takes a semi full of tires and sells them for decent price. cheaper than the normal magazine prices anyway. if i already have my tires by then, i plan on looking for a winch.

I did more researce and found that we do need new carriers. For the 44 there are two different carriers. Numerically lower then 3.93 and Numerically higher then 3.93. SO the stock one is the lower then 3.93 gears and the one we need for those of use running 4.88, 5.13 we need the numerically higher then 3.93 carrier. I have found the same info for the 8.8 so I will be buying new carriers for both axles.

now that I started looking for 8.8 cases I can only find one sized case. So does anyone know if I need to get a different sized case for the 5.13 gears that I am running for my full width 8.8 rear end? I need input asap so I can order the parts.

You don't need a different case for the 8.8. My 8.8 had stock 3.55 gears and I switched to 5.13's using the same carrier.

they make gears that work with the lower carriers if i'm not mistaken. i know for the d60 they offer the 5.13 and 5.38 for "4.10 and numerically higher" and "4.10 and numerically lower" i am guessing it works the same for the dana44 since they are pretty similar and have equal aftermarket support.

As far as i know, you can get "thick" gears that will allow you to run say 4:56's on a 3-series carrier for a low pinion D44, but not for a high pinion.

I have never seen or heard of a carrier break for the 8.8. The only thing you will need is a notched cross shaft for the spiders or you might need to do some grinding on the gears to get the shaft to fit.

If your gear guy keeps insisting on needing a new carrier for the 8.8, you may want to find someone who knows the 8.8 better.

Any way you could possibly measure the distance from the upper ball joint to the other upper ball joint? Trying to get an estimate on how much DOM tubing i need to buy for my steering.

Thanks
