Well everytime I goto a parts store and ask for a part I'm always asked "4x4?"

My explorer is a control trac and it says XL only...So I don't really know what to call it.

I have 4x4 but it also says XL on the back, So what would I call it??

Skoal,

Perfectly understandable problem.

XL, XLT, Limited, Eddie Bauer, are all Trim packages. They determine what colors, carpet, radio, etc options were available to you.

AWD aka 4wd uses all 4 wheels to pull ALL the time, 4x4 aka 4wd means you can engage it when you want (But it's still 4x4 aka 4wd)...

Hope this helps to clear it up for you.

I think sometimes we "carguys" forget that a lot of buyers of Explorers don't really know the terminology.
