Project X = Regear or SAS ???

here is my dilema....i have 4.56 gears in the rear and i have 3.73's in the front....the 3.73's i can feel have slap in them....i am pretty sure the benefits of the sas outway the ifs but, i have yet to drive my X offroad and would like to see how it handles with it's current setup in 4wd....

I really don't want to go crazy as i want to get this rig wheelin asap....cost is another issue and i'm tight on money....i have seen 4.56 gears come and go on hear and i have also seen solid axles on here for sale...

now if anyone is willing to help out on parts or whatever, please chime in too...thanks....

There's yer answer. Regear. Even if you found an axle locally, it would take forever and alot of $ to get it wheelable. Regear for a few hundred bucks, done in one day.

Get some quotes on gears from some vendors over on pirate. I bought all my gears off there, and got some great deals, and saved some cash

Also check dezertrangers, they have a ton of shops on there who will do gears. Some of them are probably very close to you.

Like Stic-o says 3-5 k and thats just for parts, steel for fabrication etc that does not include labor if any because most folks do it themselves. well maybe labor for gear install if ya farm that out to a shop and driveshaft lenghtning.

725 sounds kind of steep. I bet they would do it cheaper if you pulled the third and brought it into them. Most of us that have wheeled a TTB for a while can tear the front end apart in about an hour.

My SAS cost me about $3000. Seems kind of steep when you think about it. However, I now have new gears front and rear, new brakes front and rear, new wheel bearings all the way around, new driveshaft u joints in the rear shaft, and new tie rod ends. I figure I probably did my last brake job on that truck that I will ever do.

Most of us that say we spent 3-5k on a SAS are including new tires and rear diff gears. Both of those you already have so you dont have to worry about it.

Correct, my included wheels, tires, shocks, gears, + install of gears and a new rear axle (junkyard), sense I went a full width in the rear to match the front. Mine would have been a liitle chaper if I just reused my rear axle, but not by too much. Besides...it turned out way better!

i checked into the 4.56 gears and kit for the front and my cost is 250...my mechanic will do everything for 120 or so...the only thing im waiting on is fly n hi to let me know if they have these items in there needing to sell inventory...

i am going to put up my 89 f-250 xcab 5.8 auto, which is actually a 1 ton, for sale since gas is coming down and if it don't sell i have a donor for a 5.8 and tranny swap, grunt grunt as tim allen would say, lmao...if i sell it, it will give me play money for a sas perhaps and a aussie locker in the rear would be perfect....

I had $1,700 in mine upon completion, but as I continue work it gets mroe and more every day. Now that im locked f/r, new r&p up front, all kinds of other stuff im at around 2.2k.

Keep the one tons and 5.8 and use that for the swap.

well, i never heard from fly n hi so i went to 4wheelparts and bought my 4.56 gears and aussie locker for the front...plus i found my double big gulp cup holder, lol, another story...anyways, i will be adding another aussie in the rear in a month or so i'm hoping so that will take care of the regear...

i will be needing all info for parts for a SAS and i may start a new thread on that but, i am still interested and thanks snowborder...
