tranny started slipping- fix?

Seems today the wifes 96 v-8 auto explorer tranny decided to start slipping. Just took it out for a spin to see what was going on. Put it in gear and it starts rolling backwards a little and then the tranny will shift into gear.... start driving and all is fine. Come to a stop and try and take off and nothing for about 2-3 secs and then the tranny slams into gear and takes off..... any chance a simple fluid change could help out? or is the tranny on its way out? I changed the fluid to amsoil atf about 40,000 miles ago.

It might be low on fluid or the filter could be blocked. It could also be losing hydraulic pressure from bad valve body gaskets or loose valve body bolts. A failing EPC solenoid with high mileage might not be regulating the correct amount of apply pressure.

i checked the fluid level last night (took it for a 5 mile drive and then brought it back and checked it in park with the engine running) and it looked to be fine. Fluid doesnt smell or look burnt. I bought a new filter today and plan on dropping the pan tonight to have a look. A friend pointed me to this site with some great info!

I was hoping the truck would last another year without any problems. I am looking at picking up a smashed 97 explorer to use as a doner for my v8 ranger project i have planned for the future... so maybe if i need to do a tranny swap ill use that one for a while....
