Anyone know what most common cause of this is?

Based on the troubleshooting in the manual, P0443 indicates an electrical fault with the Canister Purge Valve. The problem could be the valve, the wiring in the circuit to the valve, or (not likely) the PCM.

Here is the page that gives the resistance of the purge valve. The other pages are dedicated to checking for shorts or open in the VPWR and purge valve signal circuits.

Here is the schematic and location of the purge valve. They call it the Vapor Management Valve in the schematic, and the Canister Purge Valve in the Powertrain manual. No wonder the parts guy never seems to know what you are talking about.

Great informative post!

I have run the tests and I appear to have roughly:

12.5v
24 OMHS @ 1rX
18 OMHS @ 10rX
9 OMHS @ 1000rx

I'm getting this same code, I'm guessing maybe I need a new purge valve?

P.S.

I got this code on a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 with the 4.0

I don't have a manual for the 2000 Ranger, but if the Purge Valve is the same one, then it appears to be out of spec.

Thanks for the response. Yah I have looked around pretty thoroughly and could not find the ohm specification for my particular year/model.

What I did find that was close appears to be in line with the specs on this post, so I'm just going to get a new one with the hoses and be done with it (hopefully.

thanks again.
