Anyone with pics of 2nd gen wheels on 3rd gen?, If so - post'em - they'll fit, right?

That's my main question is whether or not they'll fit. And of course, if you have pics, how they'll fit/how it will sit.

They will fit, I've seen it... but the off set is wrong.

The wheels sit way in under the fenders. The 2nd gens had enough roll-over problems with factory wheels, and it looks way to unsafe with 3rd gen wheels.

You sure - I was thinking the offset was to where they sat out further? That's kind of the knock on 3rd gen whees - if you put 3rd gen on a 2nd, they'll tuck way in...

Likely, he has 2nd and 3rd gens... What is it that you are trying to accomplish? You like the 2nd gen pattern better?

Curtis is right, the 3rd gen axles are a bit wider compareds to the bodys, then on a 2nd gen so to make the wheels about right they have a certain offset (can't member what it is exactly) that will make a 3rd gen wheel tuck really tight into 2gen fenders...

yeah i was wondering this too bc i have a third gen and wanted a cheap way to get my wheels to be even with the fender and it seemed like somewhere i read that 2nd gen rims on a 3rd gen made em stick out a bit more

ah.. I mis-read your post.

You have a 3rd gen, and want 2nd gen wheels. In that case you are right, they will stick out. Opposite of what I said above in putting 3rd gen wheels on a 2nd gen.

They shouldn't stick out past the fender and should be about "1 differance in backspacing. You will have to run 16" teardrops as 15"s wont fit on 3rd gens.

And in case anyone got an idea from what they read above, here's a fact:

3rd Gen wheels WILL NOT FIT on a 1st or 2nd gen explorer, they'll sit too far inside the fender wells and rub the LCA's when you turn the wheel.... not good

My previous truck was a 2001 x sport... my current truck is an 2004 x xls, which has those ugly simplistic rims... I talked the dealer into swaping the tires and they worked great... looks improved a great deal... there is no rubbing... I did notice that the bottom of the calliper/break assambly looks to be really close to the inner part of the wheel/rim... I forgot to look in the original set of wheels so I don't know how close are they supposed to be in the 3rd gen's.

They stick out about an inch from the fender... I don't have any moldings or anything, which make a difference.

Thanks, man. That's what I was looking for. And that's pretty much my setup - 05 XLT w/o any of the moldings or anything. I guess mine would stick out a bit more as I have 265/75/16s. And they are 16s that I'm looking at. 15s won't fit over the brakes or somesuch, it seems like. Who would wanna go smaller anyway??

1st/2nd Gen Explorers have 0 offset rims; ie mounting face of the rim is exactly the centre of the rim on a 7.5" wide rim. 3rd Gen explorers have 38p offset rims; ie mounting face, when measured from the centreline of the rim, is approx 1.5" closer to the outside of the rim than on a 1st Gen.

So, 2nd Gen rims on a 3rd Gen means they will stick out 1.5" more than the stock 3rd Gen rim will (which is a good thing IMO, especially if you have the flares on the fenders).

3rd Gen rims on a 2nd Gen will not fit as the inside of the rim will be 1.5" closer to suspension uprights etc, and the rims will foul.

what's the word on this? i've done it by sending the pic to my email, then converting it from a bitmap to a jpg. then post it to a hosting site and use it here. does all this make sense?

265/70/r17 after rim change

The pics of this tire on my oem rims is on another computer, but this is same tire after the rim change. Before, they were flush with the trim... and I had to crop this pic because it couldn't fit... It's not easy to see, but the oem rim was 7.0, the aftermarkets are 8.5... (sorry about the poor pic)

Donner - I like the way the rims sit on your truck, but over here, you would get a defect notice for it. The rims cannot extend past the body work. I really wanted to use 0 offset rims on my 3rd gen, but they would have stuck out by around 5 to 10 mm. So I went for an 8" rim with +36 offset, which sits them in around 20mm inside the body work (standard rims sit around 30mm inside) - so I'm happier with them, but perhaps when I need new tyres, a nice set of 275/60/17s would help to fatten the look up a bit (currently have 245/65/17, and a spare set of rims with 255/65/17).

I've got 2nd gen wheels on my 04 xlt, the tires are 265 75 16.
they do give the x a wider stance.

Anyone with pics of 2nd gen wheels on 3rd gen?, If so - post'em - they'll fit, right?
