It is a fix to remove a problem to their own software, the beagle virus is a virus that is linked to this problem.

Another piece of software that has installation/removal problems is partition magic, it intergrates itself into the OS so badly that they have to use a seperate uninstaller to fix problems after the original install. LUCOM*.exe is part of the LiveUpdate system that's included with NIS, NAV, NSW, etc.

McAfee is one of the better anti-virus programs, but as most others they charge personal users.
I personally use Avast, www.avast.com, free to home users, just need to register once a year.

Clean updates, and slows your system down at a minimum. Very unobtrusive program, unless you find a virus, and it stops you dead until you decide on the options it gives you.

OK, so I tried and failed to restart in safe mode 4 times. F11 repeatedly did nothing, and one time I hit F12 to get to the "boot menu", which did jack shit for me.

Also, I downloaded the worm fix, and I have the exe file on my desktop, I double click to launch and run it, and NOTHING happens. I get an hourglass icon for roughly 2 seconds, and then the computer stops thinking and nothing happens and nothing launches. I really don't understand this, and I am getting very pissed very quickly. Not at any of you guys, just in general. I haven't had the best of luck in much lately, and this is just the straw that broke the camels back right now.

CAN

To get into safe mode, you hit "f8" before the windows screen, it should give you the menu on which mode to start in.

OK, ran the worm fix and I think that nightmare might be over...don't see anymore LUCOMS. However, I re-started in safe mode and Norton wouldn't let me uninstall. It said something on the order of your computer is in safe mode, cannot uninstall, re-start normally. I did, and tried to uninstall just now, and it froze the add/remove programs window as per usual when I clicked "remove".

Try System Mechaninc by Iolo, Jason. That ought to clean your computer out real good. It's helped me in the past and it kicked my work computer's butt circuit into gear.

Looks good Howard, I will give that a shot tonight when I get home and back on the laptop.

Andy, $35 for that program AND you need to renew it every year for another $30. That's harsh...

a great free program for registry fixes and junk files is crap cleaner, you can find it at http://www.ccleaner.com/

on the first pass for most systems i've seen between 200MB up to 4GB of junk files, not to mention hundreds to thousands of registry errors.

Renew what? I don't have to renew anything.

I dunno, their site says you have to. *shrug*

Anyway, I do believe the LUCOMS worm is history, and with the link Howard posted, I was finally able to remove the shitstain of a program that Norton is. SO all that's left is to try to clear all the registry errors that scan claim I have.

Ken, what would be your recommendation for that task?

OK, have to bother you guys again. Anyone know the deal with "wmiprvse.exe"? I have a few instances of it running at the same time, and sometimes one of them running will be taking up 50% of the PC. The laptop gets very hot running this random program for long periods of time. It got so hot I actually fried my battery last week and had to get a new one. It usually stops when I re-start, but will kick back on again randomly during the day...

wmiprvse.exe is not a virus, and it is not unusual to have more than one instance of this program running. This is a new file that was introduced in windows XP/2003. It is the Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Service and it is an essential Windows XP/2003 service which will start whenever software requirires its facilities.

Wimprvse is software that is available as a part of Microsoft Windows. As it is a part of Windows, it is important for the secure running a nd the stability of the system. It is essential for some important functions in your computer and for your operating system to run optimally. Therefore, one should not disable or stop the file named wmiprvse.exe. In fact, it is important to check that wimprse.exe is running.

Wmiprvse is a part of Windows and is located in the systems32 folder. Its path is C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem.

Yes it can be a virus. When you check your Task Manager and see a similar-named file - or even a file with the same name - running, but tha t is not located in the systems32 folder, it could be a Trojan or a spyware. The system should be checked with the Security Task Manager. Many hackers use this virus to infiltrate the system.

There is almost never a problem with the file itself. Uusually there is a problem either with the WMI provider process or a hardware problem or incompatability that is causing the excess usage.

First see if windows update has any WMI related fixes. If there is no luck there you need to look at some of your hardware. Particularly any network card that may be installed. It may be that the drivers for you network card are bad or it could be a problem with the chipset itself. If it is a problem with the chipset, the only fix is to replace the network card. The way to tell if this is the problem, is to remove the hardware from your system and make sure that the driver is uninstalled in windows xp. If your problem does not return and you already tried updating the drivers, it's time to replace the network card.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925623

It's a fix for the wmiprvse.exe process. If that doesn't work, then what you have
is a virus/worm, in which case get your AV updated asap.

Ken

This is too much! What do you use your computer for? How much "computer" do you need? Are you able to switch to a Mac?

Ken, when I tried to run the DLed fix I got an error message that said "This does not appear to be a Systems Management Server or administrator console."

Not sure what the deal is.

Donner, I use my computer for for leisure, nothing work related. I would say I use it a lot, but not for anything heavy and I rarely play games. Just your basic forum posting and music listening. I don't want to switch to a Mac because this laptop is only 2 years old and I just don't have the cash to throw into another computer right now.
