4WD light not working, searched but ready for help.
I just bought a 2002 Sport 4x4 yesterday. It had some problems but I got it for dirt cheap and I'm fairly mechanically inclined with determination to spare. Here's the main issue...
I was on the test drive and decided to check the 4wd, obviously. The light didn't come on at all. So I then decided to see if it was just the light and put it in 4-Low. It remained in 2wd. 1) What speed can I shift into 4-High? 2) What's the procedure for 4-Low? 3) How far do you reverse to get out of 4wd? 4) What's up with my 4wd? I've been reading about the shifter motor and 4wd control module. I think I'm going to hit the shifter motor first to see what happens and if that's the fix, I'll buy a new motor to keep as a spare. What do you guys suggest? Thanks a lot! Jim Oh and if you guys are Mustang fans, please check out my brother's website: The Mustang Source |

Holiday weekend... please be patient....
Please refresh my memory... does your switch say 2high, 4high, 4low, or 4auto, 4high, 4low? -Joe __________________ -98 Explorer Sport, 4.0 SOHC, K&N drop-in, LEMON in progress! -'00 F-150, mucho mods "We need to allow Darwinism take it's course and let the idiots weed themselves out of existance." ~ Rick Horwitz We must believe in free will — we have no choice. ~ Isaac Bashevis Singer I'm not smart, just a resourceful idiot. ~ Me |

Yeah I didn't think about people being out of town, good call.
Is says 2High, 4High, 4Low. I think I've narrowed it down to the 4wd module, since the battery was purchased last month, and apparently a battery change will ruin the module. I hit the shifter motor while my girlfriend watched the dash and no lights came on. |

Don't accuse the 4wd CM unjustly... There was one and only one case where someone's CM in a later model sport died, but without hard evidence to back it up, I'm convinced it was mere coincidence. Changing the battery should have zero effect on the 4wdCM. It has no idea whether you replaced the battery or just disconnected it like the service manual tells you to do for about a hundred other procedures.
Start with the basics: Battery junction box, Fuse #13 (20A), #28(7.5A)(manual trans only) Build date before 2/17/02: Central Junction Box, fuses 35(15A), 10(7.5A), 11(7.5A) and 9(7.5A). Build date after 2/18/08: Central Junction Box, fuses 15(15A), 16(7.5A), 2(7.5A) and 9(7.5A), BJB fuse #8(7.5A, manual trans only) It could simply be a bad or disconnected 4wd mode switch. Check the resistance through the switch between pins 2 and 3. They should be distinctly different, although I can't seem to find the specific numbers at the moment... Usually around 1400, 900, and 400 ohms, but don't quote me on those... just make sure they are three distinctly different resistances in the three switch positions for now. Start there and let me know what you find. ~ Me |
