Hi fellow members

Professionally I'm a computer geek / component level tech with specialization in forensics and data recovery, that being said I've been a mechanic all my life. As a kid the old timers always told me "A real mechanic can do anything!", 52 years of experience has shown me they were right.

I'm highly opinionated and unconventional, boneheaded, always rooting for the underdog, a steadfast Linux, open source supporter and user.

Now, even with Parkinson’s I can still setup a Dana 44 or 60 in my sleep and beat the flat rate book, still do it for the neighborhood gearheads, they refuse to learn (RTFM). Guess inquisitiveness and objectivity is out of style or only comes with age.

I always had a great deal of respect for Ford, Chrysler and IHC, all having superior engineering abilities with quality of performance / reliability being the primary philosophy in their design criteria. Things that always eluded that other outfit in Detroit and still does.

Well, that’s my story, I'm going to hang out quietly, watch over your shoulders, learn my way around have fun and hopefully contribute to your knowledge resources. Now I've got to find the fuse layout for my "sled".

hey everyone... noob here. i have given up the new econobox (and the corresponding payment...YAY!) and i am searching for my first off road capable rig. We own a liberty but being my wife's truck i am limited to where i get it into. So i have decided to get my own 4x4 and use it as it should. My first impulse was to look for a jeep badged vehicle, but i have always had a soft spot for the explorer... So far i have actually found a Mazda B4000 4x4 with over 100k in decent condition, but i was hoping to get a 91 to 94 explorer for the added storage and "living space". My main concern is that i do not want the V8 explorers, though they are very dependable. Are the v6 just as good? are the cooling systems up to sitting on a trail going slow for hours on end? are they just designed to take the kids to practice? any particular model to stay off of? any input will be appreciated...

Gabriel.

New to the forum,
As my name implies I like Bronco's (LOL) I have two a 78 and a 92, but recentlly picked up a 99 Sport in black and have been getting to know that over the past two weeks. It has the typical broken spring in the door latch, and I fixed it with the good info posted on here.
Im around South Bend and Elkhart in Indiana in small town of Granger.

Dunno what I got planned for the explorer as far as mods, but both the 92 and 78 are on 35's with other cool stuff too.

Hi everyone

Hi all. I'm Tony, and I've been using this site off and on for over a year now. I'd like to thank everyone involved for the excellent write-ups here.

List of mods I have performed using this site:

-Compensating for throttle cable stretch

-Fog lights on with high-beams

-Swiss-cheezing airbox

-TPS adjustment (tried, already 0.96V)

-Several more I can't think of at the moment.

So I've got a 1999 Explorer, Eddie Bauer edition. White with the gold trim and tan interior. The factory towing package I think is the only additional option that doesn't come with the EB package. It's the 4.0 SOHC, and in great shape; 126,000 miles, and no problems. I got the car FREE! It was my girlfriend's parents' extra car. She was going to trade it in on the cash for clunkers deal last year when she was looking for a new car. My 1989 BMW 535i (335,000 miles, original engine/trans) got traded in instead, and I got the explorer.

A bit about myself. I'm in nursing school, I have 3 jobs, and a Bachelor's in Meteorology. I'm a sign maker with lettering on the side, so I get to park in loading zones sometimes too.

I'm planning to post a couple of how-to's that I couldn't find anywhere on the site, so look for that in a few days. How to do a really slick ipod input for an aftermarket stereo for the explorer, and how to end that awful beeping from the message center (not the airbag light, just the beeping when you press a button or get a message).

Thanks

Tony

Hi,
My name’s Larry & I was given a TRASHED 1991 Explorer XLT if I could get it out of my buddy’s back yard without tearing up his yard.

Well mission successful, I got it home the other day & killed (sorry PITA) the large RAT that had a nest in the engine compartment.

So far I have cleaned out about six bushels of acorns, two dozen half chewed plastic bags, & enough half eaten dried produce to start a new compost bin.

I have found & repaired at least a dozen wires that the rat had chewed up, replaced the battery & starter & driver & F passenger seats.

It is now running & my next project is squaring away the vacuum system. (I need a GOOD diagram) Or at least as much as I need for proper engine & brake operation.

I also think that the brake booster may need to be replaced, first I will replace all the check valves I can find & see how that turns out.

Once I get the Explorer “Road Worthy”, my son will be using it to get to school & work.

Oh, incase you are wondering, my username is from my Personal Ride, a 1975 Pontiac Grandville Convertible.
