Funny you bring that up...

Thats one reason why I am planing on converting my truck to a 4x4 some time this year. I've done a lot of research on it.

1)I would just have to pop in a 4x4 transmission/transfercase combo
2)pop in front differential/CV axles/ driveshaft
3)wire up dash switch/control module/wire harness

The rear driveshafts are also the same for 2x4 and 4x4 3gens.

#3 is what i'm still a bit unsure on and still researching, but I do know #3 is possible, I've seen people do all the wiring before when converting their AWD explores to 4x4 explorer on this site with push buttons.

for #1 I'm still debating on weather I want to buy another transmission/transfercase already mated or rebuild my perfectly good transmission with the shorter output shaft so I would only have to find a Borg Warner 4411 xfer.

I will do it eventually, just taking my time....

One day I plan on writing a massive thread about my 3gen 2x4-4x4 conversion.

sorry to go off topic.

So with 2/1.5 I don't have to modify anything just put the spacers in and Im good to go. My only problem is 2/1.5 is just not high enough. Was looking at 2/1.5 and then doing a 3" body lift. Does anyone know where I can get a 3" body lift for a 2004 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4?

While it's unfortunate that 86 has had such problems with his truck, there are numerous guys that have had little or no problems. I think it's premature to totally give up on the 3" lift.

As has been requested, I think some 'no problem' pics of the suspension should be posted so they can be compared to 86's and see what's happening. Maybe someone will see a difference that may shed some light on what has happened with his lift. It may also help with this 3" vs 2.5" debate.

|Is it me or does it seem that all of these ball joint problems are happening on X's with the 4.0 and people who have th V8 arent running into these problems? Maybe a different suspension set up for the extra motor weight. And yes I realize that RoadBully has a 4.0, but he is also not using the spacers.

Just a though IMHO, I may have missed some V8's with the problem, but maybe not.

No, ALL (not yelling) Ford Explorers made since 2002 use the EXACT suspension components down to the ball joints and hubs. What have you 2x4, 4x4, XLS, XLT, V6, V8, towing package, no towing package, 3.55, 3.75 gearing. They are all exactly the same in suspension and knuckles/hubs.

-let me know if you have anymore questions regarding 3gen suspension components ;D

Hey i am waiting on my 3inches to come in too...So man did this thread just got my interest... I was wondering did you measure your spacers, were they 3 inches exactly maybe a bit bigger??

Couldn't you just grind the spindle down (not enough to ruin the structural integrity) a bit how much is it rubbing??

Could you measure the actual length of the spacers??? Are they a bit over 3 and that's why the problem occurs??

Also whats happening on the passenger side?? How bad is that side??

I am afraid to ask, do you have any pictures of that side??? Or are the pictures you posted of the passenger side??

Could you measure the lengths of both?? It would be very interesting to see if that if a factor or not...

Also anyone else with a 3/2.5 have any pictures???

I can get a picture of them in the box in my back seat....but in all seriousness I too would like to see installed shots from a number of trucks for a wider comparison.

I am asking for pictures of 3/2.5 installed obviously... in order to compare how close the spring sits to the spindle...

Is there something unique to this particular application or is it on every truck... Pictures of just the spacers would not be of use... Thanks though...

Yes, there was a bit of sarcasm there...but it seems the second part of my post was missed.

Truxxx spacer kit

Hey guy's, I talked to Truxxx today about there 2.5 spacer kit and this is what they told me.

Hello and thanks for the call.
The 102010 kit listed for the 2006 and newer Explorer and the 07 and newer SporTrac will not fit the earlier models from 2002 and up.
The front kit WILL work, but the rear kit is different. I spoke with the designer of the kit today and he told me he tried to make it fit on the earlier model with success in the front, but not the rear.
I am not sure at this time if we will produce a rear kit for the earlier generation. Interest will dictate the decision.

Thats what she said.

BTW my 2.25 rear spacers actually caused the rear axel to rub the hole where it goes through the frame only just going over the curb in my driveway at an angle. Has no one else had this problem?
