Recent Flexplate repair, now a clunk...
Had a service person change the flexplate / spacer /seal 2 weeks ago.
Before, the 4x4 worked, there was some clicking going into 4 but not too much. If it seemed to be in between, it sounds harsh, but it did seem to settle down. Today, as it sowed in Denver, I tried out the 4x4. I stopped the EX, pushed the 4x4 button, heard the t-case engage and slowly started forward. As usual, there was some clicking - I am not sure the hubs really work perfectly - then a fairly big "clunk" which I heard and felt! I (slowly 5mph) crept forward, it sounded weird than after a 1/2 block, another clunk! This kept happening. I stopped, pushed the 4x4 button, light went out and I heard the shift. I crept forward, still a sort of harsh sound then a CLUNK and all was OK, I was in 2 and no sounds. Do you think that in reatchning the short shaft they messed it up?? Hubs going REAL bad?? I am new to auto hubs... Thanks! __________________ 91 Explorer Stock w/D4 4.0 - auto - 1978 Dodge B300 High top Camper 49 Dodge Roadster Convertible |

The description of the sound to me sounds like the front hubs.. When they go bad they click/bang and don't pull the truck. If a transfer case goes it always seems to be the chain which affects 2wd and 4wd. Its pretty hard to put the driveshaft on wrong.. Even if it was put on out of phase the worst it would do is vibrate.
There are other things it could be, like front gears, or u-joints but thats less likely. The Hubs are the most likely culprit. ~Mark |

Hey, thanks that is what I suspected. I read here that I can take the tire off, pull off the hub and clean it out? Is that a good idea?
