95 Loaded Long Wagon E4WD
Hello, I found you after doing a goggle for aerostars. I have a 94 2 wd 3.0 blue/green. I bought it for $400.00 off a lady with 94,000 miles on it. It replaced a 91 Full sized 302 Bronco. I got it loaded to the mickey with electrical and plumbing stuff. I swear it has more balls than the Bronco. It defintly handles much better. It had the usual problems that I fixed. But it has a problem with the horn and cruise control, they don't work. I figure there must be a bad spring/commutator set up. I would like to know how hard is it to pull the steering wheel and fix this? Also will I have problem with the air bag? My name is Brian and I own an AreoStar Van.:D

Welcome to this forum! Your problem sounds like it has a bad clockspring. Disconnect your battery, and wait at least 10 minutes for the back up battery in the air bag module (located under the dashboard) to discharge. You wouldn't want the air bag to deploy accidentally. Remove the steering wheel with a special puller tool. You could get a free loaner from Autozone with a deposit. The clockspring is located inside of the column. It is the part with the rotary contacts.

Thanks For the welcome and reply

I want to buy the parts first from Ford. Are the clock spring and contacts two different parts?
Brian

It's one part. Check the price with WWW.FastPartsNetwork.Com. He's one of this site's vendors. You might be able to compare the price or get the part number from Autozone's website. Another place to check is WWW.RockAuto.Com which is another vendor of this site. He has a 5% off coupon code listed in another section.

Part # 2 is your clockspring:

Just for reference if you want a schematic of the air bag module which is # 5 in the above diagram:

my 01 sport has the same problem

Thanks BrooklynBay

I will of course support the advertizers here. I am having trouble finding the part number for that clock spring. Are there any other consumables in doing this job?
I also need to replace the thermostat, is there such a thing as a winter thermostat any more? What would be the best temperture for this truck?
Thanks,
Brian

No, I have done nothing but hunt this last two weeks. I'm going to have to do a big tune up on this thing. Now it's missing. I'm not looking forward to changing plugs. Anyone here know the gap on the plugs on a 3.0? Thanks.
Brian

Yes I found the clockspring from a vendor here, the same one as you posted. No I have not bought it yet as I am still playing catch up after the ice storm we had in this area two weeks ago. The van is running Mahonie other than no cruise control. When I put it in I will give a full report. Thanks for asking. I hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you and all here a Happy New Year.

I'm not sure which Co. I bookmarked it but I have so many new areostar bookmarks, I will have go back through and check. The price was around $92. The scematic I found was the the same as what you posted if that helps.

I was having the same problem. I ended up doing a search on 'clockspring' and that blowup that you posted came up under airbags I think. I wll post a link later tonight.

93 Aerostar with no horn or cruise control.

No horn or cruise control. I need to get a safety inspection. Someone mentioned the clock spring.

search one word clockspring

I found the part # on Rock and now I can't find it. Doing a search on 94 AeroStar I chose Body-interior and then Airbags- clockspring. I now can't find it. I have not done this job yet.
