3.55 vs. 3.73

What exactly is the difference between 3.55 gears and the 3.73 gears ??

are the gears just simply longer through out the power band of the tranny ???

this may seem simple but i have been curious ??? would this be a good upgrade from a performance aspect ?

thanks boys !!

A 3.55 will give you a slightly higher top speed, slightly lower rpm at a given speed.
A 3.73 will give you slightly quicker acceleration, slightly higher rpm at a given speed.

Its definitely not worth the cost for the small difference in ratios. If you're looking for more power, better towing, quicker acceleration, think about 4.10's. There's no way I'd spend the money to go up from a 3.55 to 3.73, but a 4.10 I'd probably think about.

Saleen changes all of their mustangs from a 3.55 to a 3.73 so it's got to be worth somthing.

Another way to look at it:
3.55 - 3,500lbs towing
3.73 - 7,000lbs towing
About 200 rpm difference.

On a sports car those little changes can add up, but in an explorer unless it's lifted or has had a lot of performance work done it's a waste of money. You could see a lot more benefits from investing that money in other parts of your explorer
