96 2wd 4r70w od issues

Ok, this is an ongoing pain in da butt....Here's the info, 1996 2wd 5.0, 4r70w tranny, engine replaced with a '93 5.0, trans acts like it's shifting between neutral and in gear. Doesn't feel like slippage, bought truck like this, ($400.00 couldn't pass it up). I have replaced all internal solenoids and mlps with new ones. Can't get my scanner to "link" up to computer so I can't get any codes. Anyone got any possible ideas?

Does it shift OK between all other gears? Possibly could be a stuck check ball in the valve body. I would suggest new filter and new fluid. Also might want to check to make sure the valve body bolts are tight. Something you could do is put a transmission pressure gauge on the trans and watch the pressure as you drive it down the road, this will tell you if you have an internal leak or a hard part issue.

While replacing the solenoids, I dropped the valve body and checked the filter screen, verified the check balls weren't stuck, and looked at gaskets for a tear or what not. Reinstalled, torqued to 92 in/lbs, new pan filter and fluid but no difference. It does shift ok through the gears, will have to scout around for a pressure gauge and line and try a pressure check while driving, if it's an internal leak, might as well try rebuilding it. thanks

Wow, the details can kill ya....posted it was od issue in the title but didn't really explain it, sorry. When up to speed 50/70 mph, it seems to shift back and forth between neutral and overdrive.

There is an overdrive accumulator in the case under the valve body. Possibly the o rings on the piston are gone causing the fluid to leak by, or maybe the spring is broken. I have read about a lot of folks having issues with the springs in the accumulators breaking. I am not sure the broken spring will give you this symptom, usually a broken spring will cause a harsh shift now that I think of it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...3A1|240%3A1318

This is the kit I have, just an idea for ya. Maybe a place like Harbor Freight will have one??

Good luck

Eric

Just another little oddity I found. I know OBD2 started in 1996, my truck has the connector
in the cab for it and has power to it, just can't get a data link to get codes. Now for the odd thing, it also has the OBD1 connectors under the hood and I can't find anywhere on the truck that it "actually" is OBD2 compliant, ie. under hood, driver door frame etc. Have OBD1 reader for my wife's 92 crown vic, so when I get the battery chrged up am gonna try to get codes off the OBD1 connector.......weird......I'll hint to the wife about that gauge kit, maybe for xmas, lol.

what?????

This 96 truck has a 93 5.0L under the hood with 93 wiring??????
No wonder your 4r70w isnt working correctly, if it is indeed a 4r70w

does your V8 have a distributor?

Hey, I didn't do it. Just what I was told had been done to it.....supposedly all the sensors, wiring, etc. was switched over so basically just the running block was changed.......I'm just trying to get it going. And yes, according the pan bolt pattern and case #'s I could find, it is a 4r70w like is supposed to be in it.

Welp, started to get codes from connector under hood, but for some reason it won't complete the KOEO test. Starts to test, get first 2 digit flashes, then a sound like a fuel pump turning on comes from under the driver side and it quits. In order to start the test over I have to actually disconnect the battery, just turning key off won't do it. Darn thing has more issues than my ex-wife. I'm kinda stymied for the moment, but guess I'll have to hunt that noise down next time I'm home.

Found this while checking the EECIV posts...

"I currently still have the 92 PCM in it and the original exhaust with just one o2 sensor.Should I change that too? The only issue I seem to have( I posted it in the tranny forum, maybe wrong place?) is my CEL was coming on. I checked it
and I'm getting codes 522=vehicle not in park or neutral during KOEO-it was in park..and 629=CCS circuit fault or lock-up solenoid circut fault. I haven't noticed anything wrong with the TC.It seems to stay in OD and it doesn't shift back and forth or rev up and down during driving like I would expect if it isn't locking."

Exactly the problem I'm getting, shifting back and forth and rev up and down during driving, at this point any advise would be helpful.

According to the guy I bought it from, it ran good for about a year, then tranny started acting up. Engine starts and runs fine, no problems I can "detect" there. Yes, it does have a distributor.

here is your problem

Your engine is from a 93 car/truck and it is using a 93 computer

How do I know this?
5.0L explorer's do not have a distributor
96+ explorer's do not have a diagnostics connector under the hood

Your 4r70w automatic transmission REQUIRES a computer to operate it.
The 96-2001 Explorer 5.0L computer controlls the 4r70w transmission
the 3-4 shift and converter lock up and controlled by the PCM

Whoever built this truck screwed up big time, they put a 93 5.0L into a V8 explorer and instead of using the explorer computer and awesome GT-40 5.0L engine they used an older 5.0L with the older computer = sucks!

If i was you I would either:
1. purchase a stand alone transmission controller for your 4r70w (big $$$, lots of wiring)
2. convert to a different auto / 5 speed transmission
3. go to the junk yard and buy the correct engine for your vehicle and install it along with the computer/wiring, etc
4. Part it out

Wow what a headache, I hope you got a GREAT deal

Previous owners idea of runs great = please take this off my hands

Well, I'm sure I could get my 400 bucks back just for the engine, but the body is in great shape so I'm gonna weigh my options, maybe trans controller or switch to earlier tranny. Thanks for the help.

You can find 98-2001 complete 5.0L Explorer 5.0L engines with computer/most accessories here in denver for $350-500 with low miles all day long

The 93 5.0L is WEAK compared to the GT-40p 5.0L used in the explorer
You could put a C4 auto or AOD auto in it fairly cheap

The Baumman 4r70w controller is damn near $1000, I am not sure of others on the market these days, I am pretty sure there are cheaper options out there now too..
cool thing about the aftermarket controllers is you can shift your trans when you want

I can tell you this truck has not been "right" since the day the 93 engine went in, I would have a "word" with the previous owner LOL

Well, he had to move to Maine, so I'll let the snow and cold be the last word. (btw, I be in sunny florida, lol). A friend suggested a C4/C6, think it was "go vacuum and screw that electric s**t". Any thoughts on what I need to watch out for when trying to find/install a C4/C6 or an AOD?.....not sure but wouldn't computer be a lil miffed about not sensing the tranny if I went with a C4/C6?

C4, C6 and AOD are before the computer controls
I know with the AOD you had better get your input cable adjsuted 100% of you can blow the trans up in a short time (like a week LOL)

So your computer wont care
Your truck was likely thrown together, with the minimum done to get it to run = sucks! I have seen these conversions before and its just like buying $400 worth of headaches! At least yours runs good! LOL for $400 I probably would have dragged it home too
Now you know whats wrong with it

I vote keep the 4r70w and control it, its a wicked cool transmission

I'll definetly keep the tranny, maybe not in this ride, but I got a corner in the shop not doing anything right now, ( might have to move the ironhead though).
I'll probably look around for a C4, I have abit of experience with using those as switch outs. Yeehaw, more adapter/bracket building.......Bad thing is, tore my sporty apart 3 years ago to chop it (2 in stretch on the dwntubes, 3 in stretch on the backbone, 10 over springer frntend, extended the rear 3 in, widened it........I'm never gonna get it done with all this other stuff creepin in.
