Talking 4wd not engaging, no lights

I have a 95 explorer 4dr v6 with 145k on it. i bought it cheap 3 weeks ago. my issue right now is that the 4wd does nothing when i turn the swith. the lights on the dash come on when i start it but happens when i turn the nob. I am looking for a place to start diagnosing the problem.

check to make sure the switch is hooked up to the wires first, pull off the dash surround and look at the back of the knob,,
