'96 XLT Stock (for now)
Hi all!

Just joined up as I'm looking for some help with my daughter's '96 XLT (electrical trouble mainly).

Anyway, we're in God's County (also known as the Eastern Shore), but she uses this XLT a LOT, so I need to get it squared away soon. The sunroof won't close and, seein' as how it's winter here, that's not such a good thing. It'll open just fine, but won't close. I'll post more on one of the tech forums (as soon as I figure out which one).

Thanks, and I'm looking forward to "meeting" y'all!

Not yet. Not sure how to even get the overhead console down! Any tips or resources for how to do that?

Thanks!
Andy

welcome andy

Welcome To Explorer Forum! There should be a place to override it and close it with a tool like a manual window.

I found a copy of the manual online, checked that, and there's no mention of that anywhere in the documentation. If someone knows of something hidden, I'd love to hear about it!

Also, can you tell me which forum would be best suited for this question?

Thanks!
Andy

this from a service portion for the electric roof...

To manually close the roof sliding outer glass panel:

l Remove roof console (519A58) located at the front of the roof headlining (51916); refer to «Section 01-12».

l Using a flat-blade screwdriver, depress pin in center of manual drive slot. Turn until the roof sliding outer glass panel is closed.

l Install the roof console.

Cool, that's exactly what I need...almost. The big question is: how do I get that overhead console down? Do I have to remove the headliner to get to fasteners? Again, any help is greatly appreciated!

I've never had to work on her XLT to this degree, so I've not had much experience with the Explorers. All of my experience is in very old Cherokees and Blazers (go ahead and laugh, I don't mind...really!).

Thanks!
Andy

First, is this a factory sun roof? There are thousands of Explorers running around with ASC roofs in them. The factory roof will have a single rocker switch in the over head console and there will not be a panel that opens on the overhead console. If you have a panel that opens, you need to remove the two screws inside and pull down on the console to remove. If it doesn't have the opening panel, I believe you just pull down on the console. Pull straight down on the front of the console next to the windshield, and slide it forward off the headliner.

Yep, it's the factory sunroof. I'll be trying that in the next day or two as time allows. Thanks for the advice, and I'll let you know what I find.

WOOOHOOO!!! Yep, that did it alright! I was able to get the console down and close the sunroof just as described. I really appreciate the help on that part, as we're supposed to get a mix of rain, sleet, and snow tonight.

Now, as for checking the switch, I'll admit that I'm not an electrical engineer. There doesn't appear to be anything physically wrong with the switch, so the next thing is to check it with a multi-meter. Anyone out there have the ability to scan that section of the schematic, or can possibly describe how it's supposed to act when it's working?

Thanks again!
Andy
'96 XLT (as stock as it gets...for now)

It acts just like a normal window switch... lots of those posts and probably ones with pictures. Just use one of those as your sample test for checking your technique.

Gotcha. Thanks for the tips, and I appreciate all the assistance!

Let's hope it's the switch. My experience is it's usually something in the motor. At least the factory motor is easy to get to.
