Broken window - any glazers in the house?

I broke a window that's in my front door, and want to fix it myself.

It's a vinyl frame window with one side that slides open, that someone added into the existing older wood door. I took the plastic edge strips off, and I see that the glass is 'glued' onto one side of an aluminum C-channel. See pics.

I'm thinking I can break away as much glass as I can, right up to the aluminum, then slide a razor knife in to cut away the glass from the frame.

Is that how it's done? Then I would just go get a new piece of glass cut to the right dimensions, and adhesive it back in place?

edit, hmm pics aren't showing...

Also, it's dual pane, with each pane caulked to opposite sides of the C-channel frame, with about 1/2 inch between the panes.

I can see some plastic spacers on two sides of the frame, to shim it in position, it looks like they clip into a groove.

Help?

...I'll give it a try...

...Dual pain windows are hermetically sealed...Otherwise the can and will fog up like a terrarium and will get dust inside the glass...

...I have repaired a couple of these though and it is a pita but can be done with patience...The first thing is to wear gloves and eye protection...Glass can ruin your world in a hurry....

...This should be of some help...Read the first couple of paragraphs and then read the last paragraph ...Let me know if you need more info...

Cool Ted, that helps!

So from reading that link, it's a vinyl window frame, with an aluminum IGU insert. If I can get those shim clips out, I'll take it somewhere to have it fixed. Sounds like the aluminum IGU's are near impossible to home-fix correctly.

...The frame is a spacer in which both windows are affixed to when originally made...

...They will either ask if you want a whole new section/unit, (your broken insert section may cost $100-$150 to order in about a 10 day time frame) or, have them cut and install the obscure panel for you, (probably cost $50-$75)...

...You could do all the work yourself and have them just cut the glass (probably $30-$50)..

...If so much as a hand print or hair is left on the glass, it will be their forever..

...If you can afford it, persuade the glass company to do just the repair and just r&r the panel yourself..

Yeah, I'll try to just replace the pane, it's textured privacy glass, though.

The local glass shops are closed today, so I'll talk to them on Monday, see what they will do.

Hah, actually I was carrying out a tiki under my arm, and my dog tried to scoot outside. When I turned to stop him, crash!
