Ham Radio - CB - Trail Communications I have found that fourwheeling and ham radio go hand in hand. Post any questions or comments about the great hobby of amateur radio here. Of course CB'ers are welcome also. Ray, AE6H and Joe, N1LVN both moderate this forum.

Was given a Cobra 29NW Classic and wont work

Hi all. I was given a Cobra 29 Classicand cannot seem to get it to work at all. Trying to figure out if it is dead or not.

So that being said;

I have also been given a mag mount antenna. Where the coax ran between the weather stripping and the door it is worn to the core wire. I tried to separate the mesh wiring away from the core and put electrical tape on it to keep them separate. I took my volt meter and set it for continuity and put it across the center of the antenna connector and the outside and I am guessing since I did not get a tone that the mesh is touching the core at that one spot so it should be ok. However, I didn't get a tone from the center of the connector to the tip of the antenna either so I am a little lost.

Anyway, I cannot get any noise from the unit even just playing with the squeltch.

When I key the mike I get the sound like a bump of the mike getting keyed but that's it.

What should the SWR be with no antenna? I put it in calibration mode and the SWR knob does nothing.

Thanks!

First, check the Cobra website for the manual, if you don't have it.

On the antenna, what type is it? Fiberglass? Metal whip? If metal, is it powdercoated? That would prevent continuity. Is the whip removable? If there's some sort of loading coil in there, then I'm not sure what affect that would have on the test you are trying to perform. Maybe someone else does.

Well last night I checked out the worn place in the coax and there was a break I didn't see before in the center copper wire.

So I cut the coax and then stripped both and just twisted them together without letting them touch and it worked so... I am picking up a new mag mount this morning.

Hope this works.
