2002 Merc Mounty Transmission issues...

Going to work today the transmission in my 2002 merc mounty (v8 AWD) shifted hard a few times then the o/d light started flashing rapidly and the cluster said "check Transmission".... I only live 3 miles from work. After work I drove it home and it didn't want to shift gears until I let off the gas. Eventually the O/D light began flashing.. It seemed to drive fine while in gear but up and down shifting it seemed lost. Sometimes it worked fine sometimes I had to feather the gas to get it to shift. I only drove 35mph tops so I don't know what the OD did if anything. What do you guys think I am looking at here?? Valve Body? solenoid pack?? complete tranny? What tranny do I have? My wife has a 2002 mounty as well but it is a V6, does it have the same transmission? I can work on cars so if it is just replacing the VB or solenoid pack I can do that.

Also forgot to mention I've had the SUV for 1.5 yrs now and it has 170,000miles and I have no clue if it is the original trans or what. Ever since I got the truck it has done the 45-50 mph shutter ever so slightly. Other than that it has drove great. It also is kinda sluggish going from park to drive to reverse it kinds pauses before engaging. Also it only shifted hard like 2-3 times not it dosent shift hard but I have to mess with it to get it to shift..

What transmissions interchange with my vehicle?? I might be calling some bone yards looking for a lower mileage one today.

There are folks here that really know their stuff, just give them time. I think you have the 5R55W tranny fron your description, which many have had trouble with.

I would try looking over in the tranny forums, too.

Good luck with it - I think that I've read that the flashing OD light is not a good sign.

flashing OD sign means that there are multiple Codes stored in the computer, usualy related to the D/T Diagnostic system...my guess? you have a dieing shift cylanoid. sp?

if you have 4wd and not AWD i thought that was a 5r55w. s indicates a very low first gear comes with the AWD option, the other gears are the same. with 170k on the original trans, i doubt a VB would help, but it might help in the short term. Try and get the codes pulled you might be lucky and get something simiple, but a rebuild might be in your future. After i got mine rebuilt its better than new.

Got the codes scanned today and a local transmission shop. The only thing that came up is PO733- Gear 3 inncorrect ratio... They said it needs to come out and needs rebuilt. Are they correct? Does anyone know what tranny I have and what will interchange so I can call around and ask? Also after doing alot of searching on here some say this code might just be solenoids?? How do I know if it is for sure the 3rd gear band or a solenoid? Is there some tests I can do to troubleshoot it?

I would say it's been rebuilt at least once if not twice already. You may be looking at a rebuild. Worth a second opinion if you can limp it to another shop.

I was thinking that as well but I just dont want to throw another $70 at it for nothing...

The easiest way to tell if the band is broken if you don't want to remove the pan is to adjust the band from the external stud. The band is broken if it never tightens to the proper specifications. It could be a number of other things such as a bad internal wiring harness, bad connection on the bulkhead connector or a failing solenoid block. They tend to act up after 60K miles. Don't just throw another transmission into it just because a shop says that you need one. Start with a band adjustment. Clean the bulkhead connector, and if the problem still persists, check the internal wiring harness point to point with a continuity tester.
