I hate roofing
I have come to the conclusion that when you buy a house, have a roofer, not an inspector, come out and look at your roof. I was told by the realtor that the roof was 2 years old when I bought the house. As it turns out, only the back corner was replaced, and in my opinion, very capily!!!!!!
![]() Anyway, after tearing through a layer of three tab composite shingles I found a layer of ply wood. Under that was some roll on roofing. Under that was another layer of three tab composite shingles that was painted with reflective mobile home paint. Under that was some circa 1960's fiberboard insulation. After two and half days of digging all that crap off the roof, I was blessed to find that some of the tounge and groove decking had to be replaced due to rot. Now, mind you, replacing 235 feet of tounge and groove is not realy a big deal, unless you have open beam ceilings and as soon as they are removed you are looking into your house. Also, rotted wood doesn't just come up, most of it falls, and in this case into the house. Suffice to say, all of the tear down and repairs are complete after a good 5 days of dusk to dawn work, two of those days I had 6 to 7 family and friends up there ripping through the crap. I now have an enormus pile of wood, shingles, crappy insulation, nails, dust, and water bottles on my fron patio. The good news is I finished off the new vented/insulated nail boards last night and have one half of the roof papered using an ice a water shield to ensure longevity of my pain. Once completed, the roof will have an R value of 9 vice the 1.32 according to the writing on the fiber board we removed, ventilation that was non-exhistant before, and a roof that doesn't require pots for anything besides cooking

Been there in the past an yes, I hated every minute of it.. Did you at least have good weather while the roof was torn apart.

The day we started, Seattle broke their all time high temperature record. The weather was nice for lounging around and swimming at the lake, but a bit on the warm side for roofing. We went through 5 cases of bottled water in two days between 6 people. The challenge was keeping enough water cold at the rate we were drinking them. So far, there hasn't been any rain (knock on wood) and it looks like we should be able to finish before it does, or at the least get it sealed up enough to be okay.

Been there done that.. I hate roofing.. Thats one of the jobs I've done in the past.. Had a friend fall off a 15 pitch roof and break his neck. Idiot was fixing his sister's roof and didn't take the precaution to put on a safety line.

You wouldn't even catch me trying to attempt to re-roof a 15 pitch roof. Mines only a 2 and that's bad enough close to the edges. I am not afraid of heights or anything, but you can't even set anything down on a roof like that.

We did my brothers roof a couple years ago.. We had $1100 to fix 1/2 the roof (rear half was already half-assed a few years earlier)..
You have 5 people that didn't really know what they were doing.. but it came out nice.. Only 1 person went through the roof and then into the garage.. He caught himself before he went all the way through but he still broke a rib.. We were looking for bad wood.. he found one.. It took us about 2 days to do it and now that we "sort of" know what we are doing we could do it again in the same amount of time, but do it better.. BTW.. air nailer is a must.. none of us could get the nails in the wood (new wood) by hand in < 10 hits.. ~Mark |

I just made a roof on the top of my shed. It was a very hard job doing it myself. All of the local stores kept running out of flashing cement, so the project took longer than expected. The summer is a popular time for people to fix their roof since the winter months kill it. We've been getting rain every week, and it caused the roof to keep leaking since the flashing cement didn't have enough time to dry. The roof I made is flat. Water tends to sit in certain areas until it works its way in. I never knew how expensive roofing material was until I started this project. I have some pictures of the roof with the access hatch in this link: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...9&postcount=11
