Ham Radio - CB - Trail Communications I have found that fourwheeling and ham radio go hand in hand. Post any questions or comments about the great hobby of amateur radio here. Of course CB'ers are welcome also. Ray, AE6H and Joe, N1LVN both moderate this forum.

Galaxy 979 internal SWR metter wonkyness

I just installed a 2' firestikII, and got the swr to 1.2 on 19, it is 1.7-1.8 on 1 and 40. This is with my Midland 23-110 SWR meter. SWR on the radios meter closely matches this, while the Midland meter is hooked up. Once the midland is removed, the Galaxy's meter will read a good SWR on 40, but the closer it gets to channel 1, the SWR will slowly rise, getting to 3.5 or so on channel 1. Any ideas? Do the built in meters just suck that bad? Ithought Galaxy was good stuffs...

One thing I do need to mention. Due to a space issue with the radio mounting, I had to relocate all the connectors on the rear of the radio to the side. I used some RG58 COAX and ran it from the back of the connector to the locations on the PCB the connector was attached to when it was rear mounted. I generally like to think I know what I'm doing, and it all looks good to me, but all I can figure is the SWR really might be off because of my antenna connector rewire, and the only way I can see it is with the internal meter.

I think I'd probably trust the external meter more than the internal one. The internal is probably meant more to make sure you're not so far out that you do any damage. This is somewhat of a guess though.

Yea, the internal 'doesnt need calibrating' and there is an LED on the front that lights up when you hit 3.0 or more SWR to alert you.. Kinda gimmicky. I just worry that the SWR meter cant 'see' anything before it, inside the radio. I dunno.

I need to find someone with a CB, and then I can test it on channel 1 to see if either they cant hear me, or the radio gets super hot..
