Another Flashing Light/Transfer Case Question

Hello,
I have an 02 ford explorer. the 4x4high light has been flashing on and off for awhile now. It is a "4x4auto" equipped model (4.0 XLS). Sometimes it feels as if the auto4wd is not working and the vehicle behaves like a standard rear wheel drive truck. Sometimes it wont go into 4x4 high. But sometimes the light is flashing and 4x4 high works but the "auto" 4wd doesnt seem to be working. anyway, its random. i have read the information available by searching the forum. I am going to crawl underneath the vehicle and look for loose connections etc. but thought i woulds change the fluid while i was there. i didnt know if the transfer case was similar to the early model ones and if mercon V was the fluid of choice for this model too.
any other ideas what might e causing the light and beahvior in this vehicle?
Thanks a lot
