Can't talk bad on what works...If you weld good, and have the shop to do that stuff in, you could get a nice aluminum or metal heat shield.
And caldwell, a while back you asked about my MAF sensor wires (why they were exposed), well during thanksgiving I saudered and taped up the wires. So now no more exposed wires, just going to make the emissions people curious...

You have an 03 , do a whole "stage 3" intake or just do a "stage 2" like caldwell has. Definately worth the extra money. My cheap ($30.00) intake isn't even sold on ebay anymore, probably not street legal

More power and fuel efficiency and makes the exhaust (even stock) have a deeper tone, and makes the engine growl.

When Nate, and myself refer to the " stage " intakes. were talking about members who have 04'-05' V6 X's.

members who have 02-03 V6 X's have the availability of buying purpose built intakes by K&N, MAC and other companies etc.

so that being said, we have been " forced " to make our own intake, since ford combined the airbox/mafs together. so Nate and myself began tweaking the factory intake into varying levels of performance, and function i think is fair to say...

would a stage 3 just be a store bought intake? I think k&n are just overpriced I think awhile ago I saw a decently priced kkm intake.

Greeneyez,

for your application a " stage 3 " would be a K&N Intake...

* per K&N the intake for 02-03's will get you about 7-8 HP

KKM is just a cone filter, and adapter that still uses the restrictive factory intake tubing.

I will have to look for a deal on a K&N then. Would I still need to a fab a heat shield or does K&N come with it?

Once I recover from new tires I will have to look at an intake and exhaust.

I took a "quick" look to the factory intake tubing to see if I could see why it is called "restrictive" as compared to after market alternatives.

The first thing I noticed was a "black box" attached to it and I call it the “suction stealer” because I couldn’t understand its function, other than “steal” some suction that otherwise would be directed towards the filter (resulting in more air for the engine). So, I didn’t like it and I removed it and plugged the hole.

Then I measured the ID of the tube = 80mm = 3.1”, while the MAF ID = 2.75”, and the Throttle Body ID = 2.5” . So, by far the most restricted section of the intake system is the TB, then the MAF housing, and last the tubing:

So, I understand a filter with higher porosity, plus the elimination or modification of the air-box can make a noticeable difference (and it does), and by no means I’m a thermodynamics expert, but it doesn’t look like a bigger tubing would make a difference. at least not with the OE TB and MAF housing. Am I missing something here?
