I opened my fuel door this morning and felt a pop. Now the fuel door won't stay closed.

I suspect it's a broken spring or something like that, but it was not obvious how the assembly comes apart for me to look. The dealer$hip wants a little over $250 to replace the whole assembly.

Anyone have a suggestion or tips on taking this thing apart?

Thanks.

im not sure if it varies much through our years, but on my 97 there is 2 bolts on the inside holding the door on. its a tight fit but grab a wrench and take it off to inspect it. i would not pay $250 for that job!

Thanks for the response.

I didn't see anything when I open the fuel door. Do you mean on the back side of the sheet metal of the quarter panel?

yes sorry forgot to say that. after you open the door reach your hand to the left (against the back of the Q.panel) and you should feel both of them.

I see. There are 3 bolts around the fuel neck. Then with the door open I can see some tabs that hold the assembly in.

Thanks for the help.

you shouldnt have to mess w/those 3 bolts for the plastic piece around the filler neck. you just need to find the 2 that is holding the door arm on.

your welcome for the help:thumbsup:.

I just bought an '01 Explorer Sport and have the same problem. The previous owner had used a bit of velcro to keep it shut which has since lost the ability to grip.

I've been looking into replacing the whole thing but it is actually surprisingly difficult to find a direct replacement part. I'm thinking about just removing the whole thing, buying an aftermarket door, drilling some holes, and screwing it in. I'm definitely open to alternative possibilities.

Any suggestions or part numbers?

I might be able to track you down a new fuel door.
