2006 Explorer. Scan tool won't read codes.

I have a 2006 explorer 4.6 4x4. wrench light and abs light is on and my scan tool will not talk to or read the code. THE SCAN TOOL DOES WORK PLEASE help

thanks guys, it was just dirty, got code c1236, pulled rear wheel and the gear is broke , going to try to tac wheld it thank Phil
