This only applies to a 2WD...

Since I have a 1999 X 2WD I can tell you the pan can come off the bottom of the engine with the engine in place...But I have an OHV engine...The following pics are from a SOHC which is a little different from mine but not much ... Except for the two piece pan the removal process is the same... Drain the pan, remove the 2 starter bolts then start removing the lower pan... In Pic 1,there are 10 bolts in the lower pan and looks like 23-24 outer bolts plus the 5 or 6 bolts in the main cap bolts to remove in pic2...

After removing the outer pan bolts and the 2 pickup bolts, you should have a bottom end of the engine with the pump attached facing you like in pic 3... Hopefully your engine is cleaner inside..And when you pull the pump the oil pump driveshaft will come out of the engine with it...That is not a big deal just remember to replace it when reinstalling the new pump...

What happened to make the pump die? Is the engine making noises and/or got no oil pressure on the gauge?

When i got it the kid told me it was the thermostat. We replaced that. Left to go get tires, and left to go get it inspected. about 2 miles from the tire shop it started making a clanking/grinding noise and it didnt want to excelerate very much. We pulled over immeadeatly and it died before i stopped it. Checked the oil and it had no oil in it. We put in 3 quarts and it started up, still made the clanking noise until we gave it a little gas. once oil got to the motor it was ok. We left there and continued to go get the inspection. We didnt make it 2 miles before it did the same thing. We were close to a mechanics shop and they were no help lol. Then we noticed that when we had the wheel straight the oil pressure guage was fine. but when we turned the wheel it dropped. Talked to a buddy and told him what was going on and he said it was an oil pump. But im still not sure.

So where did the oil go man?

If the engine was low and you put 3 quarts in and the pressure was good and then the pressure dropped again and the oil was low again where did it go? I would want to know that first before starting on working on this unit...

Did the engine smoke or do you have some really obvious oil leaks?

I didnt see any leaks at all and after I put oil in it it showed good alittle low but there was something on the dipstick and there was smoke not much only when i opened the oil cap. The motor almost sounded like it was a deisel. But not so bad now, and thank you alot for helping me out i hope between the both of us maybe I can get this thing back on the road.

On my AWD (and I think at the 4x4 too) the books says that in order to take down the oil pan cover, the engine needs to come out.
Somebody suggested that can be avoided if the whole front end comes down too - front axle, steering rack, oil cooler... a big headache.

well that's not what i wanted to hear. but i got a buddy that knows fords inside and out his whole world is fords lol and he said i might just have just enough room to drop the pan without pulling the motor.

as "pondered / questioned".... what the heck was going on. It sounds like you had no oil as opposed to no oil pressure. Before spending a large amount (time and money), I would do a little more "testing" on where and why there was no oil and also check the oil pressure with an external gage... and also do a compression test. I don't think your "diesel" is from a pump problem more likely someone running the engine for a "long time" with little or no oil".

Ok well Thanks. I appreciate yalls help and ill try to do more testing before i decide to rip the whole Motor out.

Is your truck 2WD like your title suggests?

If it is, the engine DOES NOT have to be removed...Even though these do not show the whole underbody of the truck in one picture, it should give you an idea of what is not in the way...Look at the pictures below...You will see there is nothing in the way of removing the oil pan on the engine.. Granted this is an OHV but the SOHC engine mounting and frame setup is the same.. The SOHC has a 2 part pan and ladder frame setup but removing the pan with the engine in place is the same...

When I first bought my X, the oil pump did not work thanks to lack of maintenance...It took me longer to jack the truck up and secure it on jackstands than it did to remove the starter and the 24 bolts holding the pan...And from start to finish removing the pan took an hour...Replaced the oil pump, cleaned out the sludge in the lower part of the engine and pan, replaced the pan and filled with oil...Another hour or so...I didn't even replace the oil pan gasket; I just coated it with Permatex Avation Form-A-Gasket since I didn't know if I would be back in there or not...20k miles later I still had 50 psi hot oil pressire..

NOW; if you have a 4 wd then you have the front axle and probably the transfer case to deal with...But the pan can be removed from a 4WD if you remove the front axle...More work involved obviously...

Yes it is 2wd and I havent been able to look at it yet cause i been workin all week but I'm going to give a look over tomorrow i hope.

Dredging this thread back to life. Trying to arm myself with as much info as possible.

I need to remove the oil pan on a 95 OHV 4x4 to clean out some sludge build up.

From what I read here, the front pan bolts are blocked by the front differential. Is that the only thing stopping it to be dropped? If the engine is lifted a few inches, will they be accessible without removing the front diff?

What about exhaust? Any interference?

As far as the oil pump goes, is there any tricks/tips, to get a new one in with the engine in still? The rod/arm going to give a fight at all? Is the pick up tube/screen replaceable and leave the old pump in?

Is the 95 torsion bar or I-beam?

If it is I-beam you just do not have the clearance to remove the pan to the engine crossmember...

If it is torsion bar, the front differential keeps the oil pan from dropping out the bottom of the frame as well..And I think the pan bolts are obstructed as well...

Now raising the engine will apparently will le the pan drop out when it is unbolted...But I personally have not done this but basing this info on pics of 4x4 trucks...

And the exhaust did not interfere with dropping the pan at all...
