Retrieval of RiffMan's Pig Pen
Well... Some of you have been wondering how the retrieval of Pig Pen went. I am using the Explorer Forum names to ease confusion, because not everybody knows our real names.
Friday, I went down to Riff's place so we could leave early Saterday morning, or so we thought... We had already put me Explorer on the trailer. We did that Friday, as soon as I got there. Our origional intentions were to leave Riff's place around 8:00am and meet CableGuy at the BadLands in Attica about 10:00. Well, to make a long story short, I woke up around 9:45am. Riff's alarm went off, woke up his roomate the next room over, but not Riff. We called CableGuy, who was already half-way there. We left 15 minutes later. After a long time on the road (2 hours), we made it to Attica. Chunk (Riff's Dually 3500 Dodge Ram) pulling a trailer actually was able to go really fast on the interstate. About noon, we met CableGuy. It was Riff and I in my Explorer, and CableGuy and his friend in CableGuy's Explorer. We decieded to try the Orange Trail first... That is the trail that Riff put Pig Pen on it's side. We were doing well on the trail, it was much, much drier than last weekend. It hadn't rained since. It was a fun trail. Now for the Orange Trail Carnage... CableGuy did some custom conturing of his Nerf Bars. The trail arched his bars way up. Almost to the bottem of his door. One of the bars was bent so far up that it crimped the bar down to half it's size. But on the plus side, they did their job, they protected his body. As for me, my bars were fine. As for my rear 1/4 panels, not so lucky. On the Passenger side I "nudged" a tree. It put a nice scratch and dent on the rear corner. The Driver's side was not so lucky. While going up a winding ravine a stump reached out and gave me a kiss. A nice long kiss. The kiss measures to be 4'9" long! Ouch! It is only about 1/4 deep, but it is long. When my film is developed I will post a picture of it, if it comes out in the picture. Besides the damage we both had out fun and trouble on the trail. For example, I tried to do out of those deep Jeep Traps that are about 5 feet deep. I failed... One obstical that I tried to climb and failed (also) CableGuy concured, make me look bad do ya! Here is my revenge for making me look bad. John did have some trouble in a mud pit. Seems the Explorer is too long some times. He got stuck in a mud pit. Not because of the mud, because the front bumper and trailer hitch were BOTH burried in the mud. Stuck from directions. After the Orange Trail After the Orange Trail we went to the Lower Muddy area (where Rick and Sargon pulled out the Chevy.) Once again it was much drier. We were trying to decied where to enter, and we thought we had found a good area. Or so we thought... CableGuy went first. Made it across the first puddle. We tested the depth on the second, on the tester stick it was only about 1 1/2 feet deep. Boy were we wrong! CableGuy sunk to his bumper! It was alot deeper! In the prosses of trying to pull him out, the front passenger tire came off of the rim. Problem is, he is not to dry land yet. We pull him the rest of the way out, took his tire off and put my 33 inch spare on. Drove to his home where he grilled us some burgers and hotdogs. Riff and I crashed there. That was the conclusion of Day 1. Attica Day 2 Not as much excitement on day 2. This time it was just Riff and I in my Explorer. CableGuy had other work to do. Riff and I only went to the Rock Quarry, and played for about 2 hours. That is when I noticed that my Rear Passenger tire was losing air. We went back to the parking lot, discovered that I had rock and dirt in the bead. We tried to break the bead by standing on it, bouncing, etc... We could not break it! Next, went in to the office to try to get help to break it, and was given some good advice. "To break the bead, drive another vehical onto the tire." Genious! We rolled the Dodge onto the tire and Pop, it came off. Come to find out, there was alot of rocks in the bead, the whole way around! We cleaned the tire and rim, reset the bead, and were on our way home. Word of advice, be carefull not to air down too much. I think that is what I did. That is a summary (long summary) of the "Retrieval of Riff's Pig Pen." Sorry for being so long, but I didn't want to leave anything out. It was an expensive weekend, but it was fun.
Like Barret said, we did make it through the orange trail. Of course it was a lot less muddy, wich made it easier. That trail is tough. I couldn't imagine taking a 4-door explorer through that trail after a good rain. There were some nice off camber hills, and some good mud. There are some VERY pointy hilltops on this trail. I didn't have any body damage, but my nerf bars were a little worse for the wear. It wouldn't be so bad, but they are only 2 weeks old..... ( sorry honey) ( they were a birthday present) I did make it througha pretty tough part of the trail, but I think I still have bits of my leather seat in my A**. (definate pucker factor there) Needless to say, I should have just stuck to the orange trails. I did get a "little" hung up at one point. Ok, I was stuck. It seems my reese hitch hangs a little low. I took the mudhole a little too slow to try and show off and that's what happens. I got some some body damage from the same tree scott did.... but not near as much. Once I washed off all the mud, I found a 6" scrape on the drivers side. Nothing too noticable. All in all it was very fun, and I have a new found respect for you guys who took that trail on Saturday after the rain. However, I think I will stay away from there until the gears and lockers are in. After that, I'm all good!!!!! I will post pics when they come back. and if anyone has any good ideas on how to straighten nerf bars....... I'm all ears. Anything to get me out of the doghouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 12$ to mount and balance my 33x12.50 35$ to rebuld my alternater front bumper bent and creased brand new nerf bars bent all to S**T! I guess it could have been worse.............. I could have ended up on my side.......... no offense Riff! |

I feel a bit responsible since Piggy was left behind for my benifit. God you guys amaze me, no winches and you give er hell. Cableguy especially. When I first saw pics of your truck with the 35's it looked immaculate, then shortly after Barrett and I were picking up lights you left on the trail, now this. I guess we like to follow the words of our elders(Andre) and USE THIS STUFF, NOT BUY IT TO SHOW IT. Did pigpen ever get fixed or just get loaded on "The Stretcher" and hauled home by the EMT's (Explorer Mechanical Technicians)

Man, you guys suck.
You went wheeling and didn't invite me. I could have blown off my daughters wedding for wheeling, she would have eventually got over it. ![]() Glad you guys had a good time and I do wish I could have been there. Two weeks ago when we went was still nothing compared to last year when matt and I went through after we got a bunch of rain the night before. Thats the time he got wedged under the tree sideways, talk about slippery. Pig pen will be back at my place this weekend getting everything in order for Moab. Cableguy, the only thing I can say is get a set of real bars. Later guys. __________________ Kampy |

There is one more bit of damage that I did not mention. When I first got to Riff's place I was leaking Transmission Fluid, leaking bad! Riff and I went to the local parsts store and bought some TransX (stop leak) and the problem has not come back. I know that stuff is not the best for the Transmission, but it worked.
Next time I am going to be like Riff, not by putting the Explorer on it's side, but hauling out Mud Dog. Mud Dog is the new name coined for my truck by my friends and parents. For those of you that have seen it, it "wags it's tail," (the antenna swings back and forth when off-roading.) Anyways, I am getting a 2nd truck, a daily driver (kind of.) I got a Ford F250 and a 20' open trailer. I abuse the Explorer way too much to drive it around everyday. __________________ Scott Barrett NoIEC Member `92 Explorer XLT 7" Lift Front, 9" Lift Rear: 33" BFGoodrich Mud Terrains on 15x10 American Racing Rims : 4:10 Gearing : Carr Light Bar w/ 4 Off-road Lamps (6") : CB Radio : KKN Induction System: Grill Guard w/ 4 Off-road Lamps : Roof Rack w/ 2 Back-Up Lamps: 4 Tow Hooks (2 Front, 2 Rear) : Plus More!! |

I'm sure the 7.3L Diesel engine (451 cubic Inch) in the F250 could pull yours too.

Oh, that epic battle of Ford vs. Dodge. Pretty brave of you to mention that on a FORD Explorer page....
All I know is we better use a really strong chain/strap. That would be alot of pulling force. __________________ Scott Barrett NoIEC Member `92 Explorer XLT 7" Lift Front, 9" Lift Rear: 33" BFGoodrich Mud Terrains on 15x10 American Racing Rims : 4:10 Gearing : Carr Light Bar w/ 4 Off-road Lamps (6") : CB Radio : KKN Induction System: Grill Guard w/ 4 Off-road Lamps : Roof Rack w/ 2 Back-Up Lamps: 4 Tow Hooks (2 Front, 2 Rear) : Plus More!! |

Riff. the only advantage I see yours having is that it is a duelly. Mine has the single tire rear end. But I am still up for the challenge. I'm just wondering why you want to be publicly humilliated. Even more than being pulled out by a JEEP!

Just trying to get Scott rialed up for the pull. Nothing like a little pre-tug mudslinging to get the blood and testosterone flowing.
Hey Scott, after I beat you, I'll make Chunk do the Truffle Shuffle.
