Your going to need the book to get the torque specs (I don't have them memorized) but you alternate tightening the head bolts and the intake (lower) manifold bolts. The Final step of the head bolts is actually not done with a torque wrench. The final is you put on the wrench (breaker bar works well) and you then turn it 80-85 degrees. Thats a little less than 1/4 a turn.

They do make a special wrench with an indicator to tell you when you got to 80 degrees but its not worth buying.

Not jumping on you mark, but don't you mean <1/4 turn?

90 degrees is 1/4 turn. 360 is one turn.

Fixed. wierd. As I typed it I knew I was typing 1/2 and knew I had to change what I was typing to 1/4 turn as I was typing and then never did. See what happens when you try to answer a thread on EF while you have a 30 second pause in testing the code you just wrote

If thats the sequence, then why is Maniak talking about including the lower intake? I have never heard of including the lower before, just the head bolts!

the lower intake is important because the coolant feed throught the lowerintake and it has a mating surface with the heads and a gasket. so it too needs to be torqued in a sequence

I understand that. But AFTER you torque the heads on right? NOT during!

Ill dig up where it says both. Basically you make a head bolt pass then intake then head bolt etc.

I cant remember if it was the fsm or chiltons where i first read that.

You are blowing my mind!! Do you have a picture of what they consider the "mating joints"?

I use "right stuff" (rtv type stuff, but better) on the china wall in front and back. Thats the "wall" type thing that is on the block that runs from head to head.

By mating surface, I think they are telling you to make sure you put RTV at the joint where the head/block and intake will all meet.
