See other thread, I am having a trans issue after r/r 4 quarts of trans fluid. Did I use an incorrect product? Is there something else recommended?

Mercon V is specified for my 2004; my 1996 called for Mercon. What year trans. are we working on here?

Mercon V is expensiver than Mercon. I found one brand, it's an off-brand not well-known name, that claims to meet early and current fluid specs, including Mercon V. Lowest price I found is Wally-World, not name-brand, $3.77 for Mercon V. imp

Ford Recommendation is Mercon 5 - NOT MERCON.

I used Napa Mercon 5... worked great... $3.83 a quart here in Dirty Jersey.

Direct from Ford -

Transmission fluid Motorcraft MERCON V ATF Automatic Transmission (5R55S) 13.0 quarts (12.3L)2

Transmission fluid Motorcraft MERCON SP ATF Automatic Transmission (6R60) 11.2 quarts (10.6L)2

here is what the product states- should I switch it out?

Pennzoil® High-Mileage Vehicle™ ATF is formulated for your high-mileage transmission and is suitable for:

•GM DEXRON®-III*.
•Ford MERCON®*.
•Allison C-4.
•Caterpillar TO-2.

I know there are approx 5-6 quarts of this in the trans now. Should I switch it out?

any recommendations?

I will extract as much as possible over the next few days. Any other additives recommended? Any mecron 5 recommneded (read inexpensive)

Is the torque converter have a drain plug in the 5R55S?

wrong info Gabe

The 1995 2WD auto trans specifies Mercon not Mercon 5. The ATF fluid I added was Mercon labeled, not Mercon 5. I was slightly overfilled as I measured exactly what came out and what went back in. I adjusted by removing a quart and am exactly filled. Mercon 5 was not released until 1997 for Ford vehicles.

Code has not returned, trans is shifting fine and car is coasting better than before. I did remove some nasty trans fluid. Over the past few months I have replaced 8 or 9 quarts so it was more of a diluting than a straight change.

I will see how it goes and will flush with new mercon if the code returns.

There is an additive that you can add to make Mercon, Mercon V, not sure where it is available though.

Ford released a TSB, 06-14-4, which states Mercon is to be replaced by Mercon V. This TSB was released in 2006, although it supercedes 01-15-7, which was released in 2001.

The list includes 1991-1997 Explorers. The superceded TSB, 01-15-7, lists 1991-2002 Explorers.

Is the torque converter have a drain plug in the 5R55S?

My Ford Shop Manual under 5R55S transmission, says remove torque converter drain plug, "if equipped". Mine ain't so equipped. imp
