Bought a cheap explorer and 4x4 and heat dont work

hey
i bought a 2001 Ford Explorer XLS 4x4 for $250
the 4x4 doesn't work
when put in 4x4 high the light comes on
the driveshaft that goes to the front spins when the vehicle is on
and u cant turn it when the vehicle is off.
but the front tires dont spin.
anybody know whats wrong??

my heat also quit out a little while ago.
i checked the fluid it was full
i checked for a air blockage and i didnt find one.
i checked the thing behind the glovebox and that motor works andthe plastic piece isnt broken. any ideas?

thanks steve

Is the engine ever warming up. If not, possible thermostat.

Secondly, on many vehicles there is a vacuum actuated bypass gadget where the hot water is piped in that may be stuck.
