2003 Engine Compatibility

Howdy all....

I have a 2003 Eddie Bauer 4X4 Flex 4.0 with 150k.
My engine is done and I am looking for a used engine to put in the vehicle.

What years are compatible with out modifications?

Ideally would like to find a 2006/2007 engine....but dont know what the challenges would be. I did find a 2004 engine....but same questions.

Any help?

Here is info I got from a salvage interchange.

EXPLORER 2002-2003 6-245 (4.0L, SOHC), (LHD), flex fuel (VIN K), 4 Dr, exc. Sport Trac
MOUNTAINEER 2002-2003 6-245 (4.0L, SOHC), flex fuel (VIN K)

How do you access the exchange?

Any idea what mods would need to happen for a later model engine? if their not to complex might make sense.....

An engine (like, 4.0L SOHC?) is an engine is an eng., yes? But, no way of knowing if different year had same: fuel injector size, cam shaft timing, spark advance curve, etc. Someone really "in the know" might be able to confidently say, "Yes, an '06 (or whatever other) will work OK with your present computer". Sorry, I can't make that call, but CAN warn of possible pitfalls I could foresee.. imp
