Help. It's snowing a lot and the Ex has chosen this time to play up! I have no wipers (front or rear), no front washers (rear OK), no interior roof lights (dash lights OK) and the 4x4 switch does nothing (no clunk or dash indicators). Indicators, full beam OK so multi function switch seems OK (this shouldn't affect the 4x4 etc anyway?) I've been through the manual and the correct fusebox layout posted on here previously and cannot find a fault. The only fuse that's blown is a 7.5A in position 9 in the interior box which is listed as "not used". Swapping this out didn't change things anyway. Anyone any ideas or had this problem themselves? I have to go to work now (in the Volvo which should be fun in the snow) and have a look at it tonight. PS, it's cold out there!!! Thanks, GRoB

On the way to work, I suddenly remembered that the last thing I did was take the radio in and out a few times. Is there a multi-plug covering all these non-working functions that I could have disturbed? This is going to bug me until I can check tonight! They are an odd combination that are not all covered by one fuse.

The fuse at position 9 on my car is for the drivers electric seat motors/memory.

it looks like all of these circuits are fed off Fuse 7 in the power distribution box (30 amp). One to check in the engine bay.

Also they all take a feed out of the battery saver module which is in the centre consol (behind the radio) ;)

I would start at the fuse then go straight to the centre consol and radio

cheers

Jim

Thanks lads. I'm getting ready to go out into the freezing cold and try all these. I'm interested in P3rryn's comment that this no9 fuse is for driver seat memory since that has never worked on this car! I'll have a look at that too...when it's warmer! Also Jims comment about the battery saver. Is that the shiny box to the left inside the radio aperture? 4 inches of snow in a Volvo was exciting but only just managed it home tonight over the hills. I know you are unlikley to feel lucky to have snow, but in warwickshire we only get 1 day a year to play in the snow in our explorers, and I'm usually away when it happens.:D

We are lucky Jim, no doubt. I look frward to the snow but was very sad this morning when I couldn't use the Ex. My colleages were very amused! The snow will definitely be nice when it's up and running again, hopefully very soon. Moving it just now on the drive has just shown that the auto 4x4 is working properly, so the problem I'm having must just be the switch. Looking more and more like I mucked something up when messing with the radio. GRoB.

There are 3 boxes behind the radio. A black one to the left, one to the right and a smaller (beige-ish?) one below to the right and further back. what do each of these do? Unfortunately, I can't find a problem with any of the connections to these yetor an obvious fault with the fuses either. However, one bizarre thing did happen. I knocked the memory seat button on the door and the seat moved! It has never worked but seems to operate properly now. Now I'd better go and sort the things I'm supposed to be fixing. It's going to be a long night and it will be something really obvious and simple in the end. GRoB.

OK, this is not going well. Everything looks good which is really not good. To date, the systems found not to be working are:

Elec. Sunroof
Elec. Windows
Front Wipers
Rear Wiper
Front Washer
4x4 Switch
All Interior Lights (dash lights ok)
Glovebox light
Heated Rear Window Switch (heated window doesn't work but led on switch normally lights up)

The wiring diagrams I have a rubbish - thanks Haynes - and all the fuses look OK except for No9 in the interior fusebox.

Since I've now lost feeling in my feet due, I'm going to ponder this overnight and resume fresh and thawed in the morning. This has to be something really simple 'cos it was working fine till the other day when I fiddled with the radio (which works OK). Any further ideas are very welcome and a full set of relevant detailed wiring diagrams would be like Christmas for me. Thanks. GRoB

PM me your email address and I will send you the wiring diagrams I have (pdf file)

In the meantime I'll look into each circuit to see what is common

re the dash boxes, I know the one on the right (black) is the GEM, it does many things among them it controls the battery saver relay

Jim, I've PM'd my email address. I'll have a root through the circuit diagrams since I'm working almost blind at the moment. Searching through the forum, quite a few people have had a similar problem and the battery saver relay has been the culprit. Not sure where this relay is to test it. Some blame the GEM. Some of the postings have also attributed the problem to cold weather (good for a 4x4) which would also tie in with what I'm experiencing. Thanks for your help. GRoB

All these circuits are fed from Fuse 7 (30 amp) in the power distribution fuse box and they all go through the battery saver relay.

If you are sure the fuse is good, I would recommend bypassing the battery saver relay. it is in the middle of the centre consol (sorry don't know the colour of the box)

I'm just emailing you the wiring diagrams, go to page 52 (power windows) top left of diagram you will see the battery saver relay,

Unplug it and link the pink with one of the two black/white cables, before you do this, check between the black/white (+) and earth for 12 Volts, it should be always hot

email coming now

I have a spare GEM if you are stuck, make sure all three plugs are fully home.

I'll have a look through the diagrams you sent through and get back out there tomorrow. These are great. I'll work through your suggestions in the morning. Your help is really appreciated. Cheers. GRoB.

hi no snow down here but its cold and my explore wouldn't start this morning flat battery by the sound of it . or its just sulking as i have been using my other car for the last few days . will jump start it later and give it a run. in anticipation of snow. cheers Chris

Good news on the snow Jim. It's doing little here but is very cold. Not looked at the Ex yet, since fault with house boiler took priority! Now that's sorted and my feet have warmed up a little, I'll be outside working on the Ex. The diagrams are excellent and will be a massive help. Chris, I though I was the only one that felt cars spat their dummies out if at times. If the wipers and 4x4 switch worked on mine, I wouldn't bother too much about the other non-working things until a slightly warmer day. I would then be able to go out and play. GRoB

God there's a steep learning curve on these vehicles! Thanks to all who supplied information, especially Jim. The problem is now solved. Having checked that Fuse 7 had power to it and noticing that Fuse 27 did not, it looked exactly as Jim had said. I decided to just check the GEM plugs one more time and all were fully fitted and secure. Just to make sure, I pulled the lower of the 3 plugs off and reconnected it and....the interior light came on!! The wipers and windows work and all looks good with the world. I bet it all fails again when I've put everything back together but now I know what to look for. Anyway, I've now also got memory seats, so what more could I ask for? Many thanks again and the wiring diagrams will be invaluable in future. Time to go and play! GRoB
