1998 Explorer 5.0 XLT
My dad has a 1998 Explorer XLT, It has all power, A/C heat work great, he just had $900 worth of a/c work done to it new compressor and such, new fuel pump, tires with about 10000 miles on them, leather interior, power sunroof, Its the 5.0L engine and runs perfect with about 157,000 miles on it.

It looks and runs I would say like new. How much could he sell this for on the street? Car Max offered him $1000 and said one of the fenders was repainted which is BS cuz my dad is the second owner and he knows the previous owners and knows it has not been repainted.

Was Car Max smoking crack or is that a good price from a dealer? How much could he get for it selling it to someone him self

Thanks, jason

All over the board depending on the buyer. Could be $1,000 or could be up to $5,000.

If he would like to sell here, $20 to go Elite gets you an ad in the for sale thread with pretty good exposure to Explorer owners who might appreciate it more...

Unfortunately, the used SUV market has recently crashed with the gas price hysteria and eco-push. I wouldn't expect to get much more than a few grand for it. $1,000 is too low though, IMO. Sell it privately and you should do a lot better.

CarMax is on crack if you are selling...On meth if you are buying...Have you checked their prices on what they sell?

I went with a friend to look at cars to replace her Rav4 and they offered her 2200 for a 6 year old 34000 mile car and over 27k for a 2 year old Prius with 77k...

She bought a new Prius for less than they were offering for a used car...

I would take that Ex as far from CarMax as you can get...And you will get crap for a trade-in too if that is an possibility...Private sale would be the optimal course to get the most for the truck...Especially in Houston...You can find lesser examples going for well over $3k...Check Chronicle classifieds and Craigslist...

Good Luck with selling it...
