Help me please.

I just acquired a 1996 explorer xlt 4x4 for free from a coworker. The tranny went out and she bout a new car. This thing is nice and i thought id put a tranny in it and sell it. Well i bout a new 4r55e for it and and new torque converter. And proceeded to put them in. Old tranny had these symptoms:
Would not shift into gear until higher rpms
It would randomly diengage and free spin.
Used parking pin to slow it down so i could put it in drive and drive it home.
(not good but eh it was shot)
Clunked into gear

New transmission:
Shifts into gear nicely
Powers off the line without slippin
Can power brake no slippin
But... It has the same exact problems between gears. Wont shift till higher rpms
Cant find overdrive

I had the line pressures checked and the diagnoses was low line pressure.
The guy told me this tranny was bad too and that it was the clutches or the valve body. But with the same problems i dont believe it. I cycled key and tried to relearn comp but no luck. I talked to a friend who was a ford tech for 14 years and in the 300+ explores he has worked on it had very seldome been a bad valve body. He told me that if the kick down isnt set right or somethign somewhere (was a little over myhead) it could be diverting pressure in the wrong places and causin these problems. Please give me some insight on how to check or other diagnosis. Im frustrated and i want it fixed.

"NEW" 4R55E? One can buy a used or rebuilt, but not new. So, what did you buy?

Problem looks like, you want more diagnosis of present transmission troubles, but did not diagnose those of the original one, which might have been in better condition than the "new" one.......imp

First suggestion. Check the Throttle position sensor.

<1v at idle position, steadily rising to 4.5v as you slowly open the throttle.

High TPS voltage will hold the lower"passing"gear, as the PCM "thinks" the throttle is floored.

Just throwing it in there.

Well its not new but it is newer. And the old tranny was completely destroyed. Metal in the pan. Okay well my diagnosis of old tranny was that it needed to be replaced. The lady i got it from left it at the shop where they said tranny was bad and thats where i picked it up. Never had any suspiscion that something else would be causing these problems.

man! talk about a stick up the..............

anyways do you know if it has had the cruise control recall modification done to it yet?

some of the modifications done to fix the cruise control causes the motor to rev up and shift hard/lagging between gears. not knowing this and staying on the throttle would cause problems in the transmission department.

just throwing it out there mine did this till it learned the new fix

Actually there was no joke to it and I have helped out a time or two but thanks for the advice. You come here nice and fresh with a transmission problem and expect an immediate solution to a problem your 14 year Ford tech friend can't/hasn't helped you with. You had two constructive posts, neither of which did you answer with facts. Your diagnosis of the original transmission was, in your words "The lady i got it from left it at the shop where they said tranny was bad" which is meaningless. You swapped in a used transmission which is okay, but based on a transmission shops determination that the original one was bad. This is not going well for you and I understand your frustration but calling a forum you expect help from USELESS is just plain asinine. People here are quite willing to help where they can, including me believe it or not, but insulting them is not the way to get that help!

Can you explain what you are talking about here? Is there a cruise recall that does something other than add a fused harness/replace the deactivation switch/inspect the connectors to prevent a short leading to a fire? What does the cruise recall have to do with this. This is new info to me but hey, I'm willing to learn.

You are obviously a Retard sir. Go to the dealership, and try to get your FREE answers. I bet when you pull up to the garage door, a red carpet will be unrolled for you, 25 knowledgeable mechanics will be greeting you, the owner will make everybody stop what they are doing, to make sure your high & mighty self absorbed pompous ass gets pampered and see to your every whim.

sorry! missed this post!
but!
when I had mine done in the explorer, it start to rev to 3K in first gear and then shift hard. wasn't every time from a standing start but it was always when you least expect it.

when I took it back to the dealer who did the recall the guy said the truck had to learn the shift commands over with the modification. and after about a month all is well again.
haven't had an issue with high revving shift pattern since the recall and that was in the fall.
talked to a few others who have had the same thing happen and they said it cleared up with in a few weeks like mine did.

I have no way of knowing if this is true, but hey! ya never know!

When It Becomes Wasteful:

IMO, only, it is a waste of valuable forum space and computer memory to "resolve" issues by "ganging-up" on one-another.

Perhaps my own "quip" was out of place. Others must answer on that one.

At any rate, it sounds as though some good came out of the thread after all, regarding engine speed and cruise-control inputs to it.

Pray, let's get on with business! imp

Edit: Added thought-- I am impressed by correct useage of "asinine", as most people think it refers to "anality".

Okay well im in a pickle to get this thing out and excuse me for posting that but i wasnt getting any constructive answers. But all in all after you called me retarded and what not, which there was no reason to be a douche over a forum site, but im clearly not
Retarded i have a driver's and i am able to use a computer. Now with the exceptions of idiot savants i dont think many mentally handicapped people are very good at using computers. Now this cruise cpntrol
Thing is new to me and i do not know if it has been done but u think it will help
If it hasnt. I dont know how long the computer will take to relearn its shifts but it hasnt been driven a whole lot because of the problems ive had. Im a little scared. Could a bad cpmputer cause this? And if so where woulf i find said computer. Thanks now im sorry i called ur forum out for being useless but it did grab a lot of attention and some good starts to an answer. So that comment about catching mores flirles with sugar than shit
Should be rethought. Lol. Thanks and sorry guys.

Well there are thit flies too you know.

I know of absolutely NO WAY the cruise control recall can affect the transmission shifting. You can read the complete, including dealer info, HERE

Research TSBTSB 97-22-4

Your 96 TSB's, several which pertain to transmission issues.
Technical Service Bulletins
1996 Explorer - US (English)

The Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's) listed here may NOT apply to the vehicle you are working on. You MUST run OASIS with a specific VIN and Symptom Code to determine if it applies. If OASIS does not return the TSB, then it does NOT apply.

This is a tight nit community with nothing but helpful people on it. Your new and you get a pass from me for apologizing. Takes a decent person to admit they were wrong as you have done. I will also retract my out lash comment towards you, and apologize myself for my rude comment.

You will be amazed at how well this place really does work, just hang around for a bit, and you will see for yourself. Some thread questions are answered in seconds, some take weeks, but most get some form of help.

Give a little, take a little, that is what makes this place priceless.
