just discovered the health and fitness section!

while i was trolling the forum tonight, i noticed there was a health and fitness section and i think thats pretty damn cool. you dont see too many vehicle forums that have a fitness forum, and me being the fitness freak that i am, please feel free to post any topics or even pm me about anything fitness related. ive played sports since i was five years old all the way into my adulthood, and still play today. im your prototype gym rat, love to hoop, and lift weights as well as many other sports and physical activities. if anyone shares an interest in the following and would like to discuss, ill be trolling this part of the forum regularly now!

weight lifting & nutrition
basketball
softball/baseball
football
boxing (sorry, i dont do mma)
mountain biking
bmx
skateboarding
running
hiking
snowboarding

ive played through high school, and currently play in a competitive city b-ball league and coach and play on a beer leauge softball team, and still get my three days a week in the gym.

these are pretty much all the reasons why i got my ST so post if you'd like to discuss any of these topics, im ready for some good fitness banter

cool, im in vegas about 2-3 times a year but never have been mtbing out there. hows the riding out there? what kind of bmxing do you do? race or freestyle? i know there was a pretty sweet aba track out there from way back, but i dont know about these days. if youre into mountain biking, you should try to find your way up to the bay area, its pretty much the mecca for all mountain biking. i feel so lucky that i can ride the marin cross trail/bolinas ridge any time i want. im currently on a GT avalanche 2.0, and i also have a kona muni mula that i just gave to my brother.

yeah, it isnt too accomodating for bicyclists downtown and on the strip, but there are some cool looking landscapes outside of the city limits, didnt know if there were any cool trails to ride though.

Hey LONO, I forgot you were in the fitness section. Have you tried the paleo diet? A couple of my buddies are on it and like it. I just try to eat well, not too much of anything. I probably run +10 lbs or so but whatever...

hey wood, ive heard of the paleo diet, but i dont really believe in diets. i believe in life style changes. i find that most people will kill themselves dieting for a few weeks or a few months to drop some lbs, or get up/down to a certain weight. then when they do, they go back to their regular lifestyles and then they gain the weight all back, or lose all the weight they wanted to gain and then they kill themselves going through another diet. im more of a believer in living a balanced, consistant lifestyle. that paleo diet worked for the cavemen because the cavemen werent sitting around on a couch all day playing xbox and driving up to a window to get their food. i think youre on the right track with just eating as balanced of a diet as you can. a popular fad diet i always hear about is the atkins diet which requires you have a heavy protein diet, and to cut out all carbs. looking into the drawbacks of this type of diet you will find that your body needs carbs to metabolize what you eat and if you are lacking in carbs your body will use your kidneys more which can wear them out. symptoms people suffer from prolonged atkins dieting include fatigue, lack of energy and libido.

my advice would be to just stay away from the fad and crash diets, and to have a consistent diet with regular excercise. im not exactly an olympian, but i was a multiple sport athlete growing up, and continued to play in city basketball leagues, competitive softball leagues, i run, snowboard, hike, and BMX and mountain bike to this day. i just logged in over 300 miles on my bike this past summer.

a few more tips i can give you if you are looking to drop a few lbs is to eat multiple small meals, instead of a few large meals. eating breakfast every morning will help you lose weight too believe it or not. just think of your body as a furnace and your food is the fuel. eating breakfast first thing in the morning is like lighting the pilot to your metabolism and it will get your body burning fuel all throughout the day. eating multiple meals a day will keep your metabolism consistantly burning and the smaller portions keep you from storing the extra energy (which are converted into lipids (fat)) which makes you pack on weight. you may have heard fo this already, the key is forcing yourself to do it everyday. try not to snack on candy bars and other vending machine type items throughout your day as these will kill any progress you make. stick to square meals. the fats in meats and sugars arent as bad as people think, its just when you are eating 16 oz. steaks with creamy potatos that do you in. try to avoid foods with preservatives, sodas, fructose and things that are vacum sealed. follow these little tips and stay true to them and im telling you, you will be blowing your friends out on their paleo diets. oh yeah, nutrion is 75% of the equation, mix in some mild consistant physical activity and you will be good to go. like i said, im not olympian but at 29 years old, my 40 time is right around 4.5-4.8, my mile time is right around 6 minutes, and im still putting up 250 on the bench. good luck and let me know if you ever need any help or info on anything!

Yeah I totally agree with your wisdom. I just try to eat real food and stay away from processed stuff. I eat breakfast every day, I don't like being hungry so I carry snacks.

I'm off track right now because I am getting physio for my shoulder but I usually work out pretty much every day with one or two days off per week. I like circuit training but when my wife comes along we usually do a P90X. I have been doing a bit of a circuit afterwards while she runs on the treadmill for a while.

I don't try to, or I tell myself to not try to keep up to my pals. They are all 10 to 15 years younger than I am and aren't quite as beat up. The boys like to Crossfit so I modify just to participate when we work out together. I can't lift much weight above my head or bench press as my shoulder gets aggravated. Oh well, I do other stuff.

I have been wearing a weighted vest (30 lbs) while doing a circuit the last few weeks. It's great, I have noticed changes in my pullups, running, almost everything. I did X a couple times wearing it, that just plain sucks...

I do strongly suggest wearing a heart rate monitor. Mine beeps when I go below or above my target zone. It also tracks your work outs and tells you how many calories you have burned, how much of your work out was in the target zone and what your max heart rate was. Pretty neat and it wasn't that much money.

sounds like you are on the right track. the heart rate monitor is a great move because knowing what your heart rate is and keeping it at a safe but high level is the key. im usually not a fan exercise stuff they sell in infomercials, but my buddy got into it so i watched him do it and i think its a great thing. dont worry about your crossfit buddies, that stuff is great, but i think it throws a person's lifestyle out of balance. i got friends doing it and its like an obsession. it takes away from other things to enjoy in life like having a candybar or sleeping in once in a while, or missing out on social events because you have to work out again. in other words, it throwsyour life out of balance in the opposite end. too much fitness! trust me, dont feel like you need to do the crossfit thing because your friends do. most of my friends doing crossfit can kill me when it comes to doing crossfit stuff, but i can still kill them on the mountain bike trail, hoop court, softball field and snowboarding. plus i get to drink beer whenever i want! one last thing, taking an interest in your health with you wife is the best thing you can do. you will keep each other motivated and you get to spend more time together doing fun stuff.

You are totally right about the Crossfit guys, they border on the obsessive at times. I like to have a beer or two, eat too much steak occasionally etc etc... you gotta live.

Keep the bigger picture in mind. Healthy body and mind, nothing to excess, and change your workouts up every so often. I take a week off every couple months or so just to give my body a chance to catch up and repair. Seems to work for me.

hey LONO, you may know the answer to this. I found an old thing of protein powder in my friend's closet. it says it expired in '09 but i smelled it and made a small shake and it tasted fine. does protein powder actually go bad?

sorry for such a late reply shagr, but i would just go and get a fresh batch of protein powder if i were you. i dont think you will become violently ill from it or anything like that, especially if its been sealed, but it might just be a waste of time downing all that stuff because, its effectiveness will have been lost over time. time will reduce the how much your body will absorb of it. same reason why vitamins have an expiration date.

Just to get back to the title of this thread: two years in and I just found this subforum down at the bottom. Of course I'm procrastinating on my studies, but I have also gotten back into my healthy lifestyle habits again and this forum just happened to catch my eye. Going to be checking in here more often. My most recent bad behaviors have been more of a decreased activity and crazy eating cycle more than excessive calories or bad content.
