Fun with the D7000

These are some of the first shots I've taken with the new camera. Shooting in available light between ISO 4000 and 6400 depending on the shot! The first shot was taken at the very end of the sunset. The sky looks much brighter in the photo, than it really was.. Even at ISO 6400 the shutter speed was 1/20. With the vibration reduction lens (VR) I was able to hand hold a shot that should have only been possible on a tripod. The lens was zoomed to 75mm for that shot.

I love my D7000. The thing i love most about it the low noise when shooting at high iso. This is also the first camera i have ever used that didn't get weird hues when doing extremely long exposures. I also love the active D-lighting or whatever its called. No more blown highlights and ugly shadows, one of the many things i have always hated about digital
If anyone is in the market for a new digital SLR I highly recommend this camera!

Here are some photos i have taken with mine

My favorite of coarse

Excellent shots! My favorites are the long exposures of the river, and lake.

Can't wait to spend some more time with the beast, I just got mine yesterday. And it is a beast! The camera is so highly configurable it's just nutz. I bought the book "Mastering the Nikon D7000" and read it cover to cover before the camera ever arrived. When I got it in my hands I already knew how I wanted to configure it.

Who ever thought we would be able to shoot at 6400+ with such fine "grain" structure. That would have been impossible with film.

I looked at your album. The photo "How to ruin a good picture" what is that to the right of the dog?? At first I thought it was a car door, then I realized I could see through it. Looks like some kind of glare, but it's so sharply defined it's just strange

I would recommend visiting Sedona and Jerome. Great photo ops in both places. Oak Creek Canyon runs through Sedona, very nice area. Jerome is a very picturesque old Western town. If you have a chance visit the Gold King Mine which is just outside of Jerome. Great photo ops of the guys collection of antique trucks, and implements. You have to pay a small fee to enter.

The D7000 is an amazing camera. I have a D90, the predecessor to the D7000, and my father has a D7000.

I do most of my shooting with my D700, my D90 is in the bag as a backup except for the odd occasion when I want a little more 'reach' out of my 70-200 2.8 vrII

I like your pics!

My main camera was a D200 with the D70 as a backup. The D70 is now for sale, and the D200 will be the backup.

My main camera will always be my Pentax 645. I love my D7000 but No digital camera can touch the quality of Medium format film. I only use my digital SLR's for sports and long backpacking trips when caring a big medium format camera is not not an option.

I've got a Mamiya 645 system and a Calumet 4x5. Haven't touched them in years... I print up to 16x20 from my digital cameras and there is no discernible difference between the high end digi cams and the 645 in a 16x20 print. The 4x5 does have the edge in detail when shooting vast landscapes. There is so much you can do in the digital darkroom. Best part is you are never locked up in the dark, and you don't have to count on a lab to "interpret" your prints if you're not printing them yourself.

Rick, I copied the ^^ post here so I wouldn't clutter up the FHDP thread.

Do you remember your settings for this shot? I imagine you bought the body and not the kit so this is also using one of your good lenses?

I got the D7000 kit (18-105 VR lens) about a month ago. I have been setting it to full manual and just shooting to figure out the setting for different situations. Loving it so far.

Shot that with an 18-200mm VR ED lens.

Settings were:
1/400th F10 ISO200 Lens was at 18mm.

I normally shoot in program mode which makes an auto exposure, but still lets you choose aperture or shutter priority by making adjustments with the dials in front and behind the grip.

I use the histogram a lot to let me know if I need to set an exposure compensation for the lighting I'm using at any given time. For daytime shooting I often set the compensation to underexpose 1/3 stop so I'm sure to get all the details in the highlights.

I've heard that a lot of pros shoot that way. I'll have to give it a try.

The hawk shot is awesome!
