2003 Explorer XLT
Hi, New to the forum, but, I'm in my 2nd Explorer. I hope that counts for something (lol), because although I've searched and searched, I haven't found an answer to my question.

OK, so I just bought an 03 Explorer XLT. I really would like to add the OEM Navigation system, but I can't seem to find out which one will actually fit. Truthfully, I'm thinking maybe Ford didn't offer it in the 03, which would be why I can't find it.

Does anyone here know IF Ford did offer it in 03? If so, can you point me in the right direction to find it? Maybe a part number? If not, what would be the best one to put in it? Would one from a newer Explorer, Escape, etc, fit? Or is aftermarket my only option! At the very least, I'd settle for an OEM SAT radio option for XM or Sirius.

Thank you for sharing your expertise to help me with this issue!

That wont work, mounting it 100% different, size is different. the 06+ are canbus controlled and your 03 is not. you would have to hack apart your dash to fit.

arjona, FYI, I have an 06-07 HU in my '02, on the one I got, mounting is the same, but I know what type of mounting you are reffering to, I did have to get a reverse wiring harness for it to work...
The one I linked is aftermarket with a wiring harness pre-installed or so it seems...

do you have pics of it?? the mounting on the 06 i had the screws were on the side of the radio. on the 02 4dr they are on the bottom, 2 dr you still had to use those "U" shaped removal keys

Mine is 4 door, and has the holes at the bottom

The HU has a build date in 06, and reads mp3, it also has the input for sat radio, I got it new from ebay from someone who went aftermarket

thats not an 06 radio. this is an 06 radio.

that looks like the radio from a 05. 06 is the re-design year.

I bought a pie input, I'll take the HU out sometime this week (hopefully I'll have time) and take a pic of the model # and build date

navigator is not an explorer. 06 ex the dash opening is larger than that one and the one you have. meaning in an 03 you would have to cut the dash..

I think the OP is looking for an OEM NAVIGATION unit that will fit his '03. Not a radio/CD from a Navigator.

I'm looking for the same. I think it will have to be after-market though. Found some on Crutchfield for my '02 but prices are up there....more than I want to spend right now.

Mine is OEM, and it was just an example that it might be doable, so regardless of which Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle it came from, it still OEM Ford and it might still be doable, given that it's the same size and has the same mounting points

But does it have a NAVIGATION system built in? I believe that's what the OP, as well as myself, are looking for. The ones that are factory or aftermarket usually have a large-ish 6-7 inch screen for the navigation system and are a touch screen. The one you're showing is just a factory 6-disc CD changer/radio.

This is one I'm looking at from Crutchfield:

No it doesnt have nav built in.

That pioneer is a great selection!

No it doesn't again, I am pointing out that yes, you might be able to do it, here:
Same size, mounting and has nav (OEM since it's from Lincoln):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-...e:Lincoln|Model:Navigator&hash=item27be544623
Then you'd buy this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fact...ries&fits=Model:Navigator&hash=item33644a3cd9
And something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d2cd1b021

Plus the antenna for nav.

I have not tested that, so I can't be 100% sure that it will work, what I know is that I was able to upgrade my HU to an 06 one with MP3 with a little wiring.

Disregard; I need to read a little more carefully :D

Thanks. That's much more helpful info.

Have no need for MP3; just cd, nav, am/fm. The lincoln one looks interesting but would look out of place in an '02. Unless they come in other colors.

I'll keep looking. Here's an interesting one:

Thanks again.

EDIT* It's looking like 07 might be the first year it was OEM offered on the Explorer/Expedition.

Now THIS is interesting!

Says it's OEM but I've never run across this before. Anyone have any first hand info on this setup?

Lincoln Aviator nav system is the one you want. They r extremely difficult to come across. I've only found one and it had a cracked screen. Truthfully what u would pay for it I wouldn't bother. The new units from brand names r Lot better and fit quite nicely. the Aviator system u can't upgrade the nav, for new roads etc, no Bluetooth, no usb, many new units also have color changing display to match oe lighting, keep steering wheel controls, and make your stock speakers sound a lot better. Besides the Ford cd player suck I've been through 2 already. my alpine cda9811 in my 92 maxima lasted me 6 years without any glitches sold her in 05. And they r generally less money than oe for there features. Save the loot for some cool mods. Like say a bull bar with tow hooks and a hitch reciever built in with a hinged plate relocater. Jmo

Build Date does not equal Year model
The eBay link you provided is for Year Model 2006, the radio you have is Year Model 2005

Ok, build date is Apr 2006, mine plays MP3, and has the Aux button, but again, that was not the point at all.

My post was just to show that you can use one that might not be plug and play, but you can make it work, apparently that info is not good enough in this thread, so I'll just butt out
