02 explorer abs HELP PLEASE

I was just given a 02 explorer sport 4x4 with 52000 on it in pretty nice condition. The only problem is when coming to a stop around 5 miles and under the abs engages and the peddal gets alittle soft? There are no lights on the dash ie; abs or check engine and other than that the truck runs like a champ. The gas mileage isnt to good so far got around 100 miles to a half tank in the city havent been through a whole tank yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I hate being taken advantage of at those great ford dealers. Thanks again for any and all help.

My guess is that there is a difference in the reading in the vehicle speed sensors (one at each front wheel hub and one at the rear differential (also one at the output shaft of the transmission but this one would affect the shifting and operation of the transmission so it's probably fine or you would have a light on the dash)).

I believe a lot of people have had issues with the rear sensor mounted on the rear differential. Check the sensor (all of them for that matter) to make sure each harness is properly plugged in if that still doesn't fix it you may want to try to remove the sensors and make sure they are intact and look good.

When I had problems with my ABS the light would come on after starting the truck and coming to a couple of stops where the ABS would activate. After the light came on the ABS system disabled itself. I had a 150 mile drive back home and by the time I was a few miles from the house the real problem became apparent: my front wheel bearing hubs were bad which had screwed up the speed sensors. After installing new wheel hubs and speed sensors my ABS problem was solved (along with all the wobbling and noise :-)

Im gonna take it to advance autoparts tomorrow, I spoke to someone there and they said they can check the abs to see if there is any codes. If nothing comes of it gonna have to get under there and check them out. Much appreciated thanks
