Rough idle, cut off, etc.

first time posting, and new to Fords.

I bought a 96" Explorer and the check engine light is on. The symptoms are:

when at idle it roughs very low RPM then wants to cut off

when driving down the road, it will sometimes want to "skip" or "hop" as if it isnt getting enough gas maybe

i think the gas mileage is suffering due to this

i have to keep my foot on the gas at a stop light to keep the RPMs up to 1,000

PLEASE HELP!

I would check for vacuum leaks.

i am not sure how to do that or where to start. can you give me a little more direction.
