Major Computer Display Problem

Ok guys I need some help on this because Dell is on last legs on this issue and I am loosing my patience with them.

The Issue:

When I am on a screen with a lot of white (say the "Shades of Grey" theme or facebook) browsing on EF then the white "color" or say background is good and bright. However when I go to a screen that has a lot of dark in the background like my desktop with a picture with darker colors and different things the white gets darker and almost greyish.

The Replaced Parts:
They have replaced the Lcd screen three times, motherboard once, and all the cables on the inside that deals with the display functions three times. Drivers, bios, and other software multiple times (driver has been deleted and then added back on for over 15 times).

The Spec's:
Dell XPS L702X (17" Monitor) Laptop
Intel Cor i7-2630QM
8 Gig in memory
1 TB of HD space
Mini Display port
HDMI port
2 usb 3.0 port
1 usb 2.0 port
1 esta/usb 3.0 port
Windows 7 Home Premium (6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

The Problem:
As you can see this issue is driving me up the wall and no one seems to have an answer. I have never seen this issue but it is not just me and the technician that replace the parts both times noticed it.

Anything I can try would be great,
Burns

What type of connection are you using to go from the box to the monitor? VGA? DisplayPort? HDMI? And I'm not talking about the port itself but the actual cable (since some ports can carry the angalog VGA signal and therefore adapters can be used). I ask cauz if you're using VGA, interference can sometimes cause some "ghosting" which might render a white object on the screen darker when placed next to a dark object.

Its on the LCD only. Neither the HDMI or MiniDisplay port have issues.

On my desktop computer my monitor has something called "dynamic contrast", which essentially makes the screen brighter (Increasing contrast) on white or "brighter" screens. When going to a screen with very dark colors it darkens the screen (reducing contrast). This setting is made on the monitor itself, now with Dell laptops I'm sure there is some function keys that can enable/disable this feature and go to a fixed contrast setting. I'm not sure if Dell also allows this change in the BIOS ( I doubt it but could be ). The driver might also have a setting for this as well. My best bet is the LCD is set to "dynamic contrast" and is adjusting the contrast according to the colors on your screen.

I have a brand new(in august) HP dv6 laptop. I have similar issues. On this site everything is ok, but some sites (ford ranger forum comes to mind first) at are darker in colors cause the screen to dim or adjust. It hasn't been a real "issue" but I too would like to see what may be causing this.

My laptop has had a new motherboard put in already as well.

wouldn't be a inverter or power supply issue. I'm suspecting possibly refresh rate of the screen. Is the screen flickering at all?

Ben, thank you, I believe that was it. It was set to change the screen brightness like this when on the battery. Plugged in it was set for max performance, that is why I only noticed it sometimes(only when unplugged). I think I'll leave it as it for now. I usually am plugged it anyway, and I enjoy getting 6 1/2hrs battery life.
