Im looking to see if anybody knows where I can pick up a skidplate like this for a ford 8.8? Ive been searching this site and others and have come up with nothing. Im sure I can have one built but if theirs a company out there selling one at a fair price I rather go that route.

Looking for something like that too
So I'm subscribing

Does the 8.8" really need something like that? That's a pretty solid chunk of iron under there...

I'd be more worried about the tin steel cover myself.

Then order a new cover with drain and fill plugs
For better protection and serviceability

Its for the drive shaft and u-joint protection and makes for smoother drag over rocks. They work wonders. I have a couple friends that run them and say they don't catch every big rock like the used to.

I sometimes scrape in deep two-tracks, and it's killed my pinion seal and peels the bottom lip of the diff cover back causing a leak. I've been looking for something like this but didn't think it existed! Time to fab something up I think!

I think 250 is way too much as for that. It's nothing but maybe $50 in materials and an hour or so on a brake. Or 5 seconds on a stamp press.

It would be as pretty, but I'm tempted to make that myself.

You must have some pretty limited knowledge of what goes into fabricating parts. You make it sound like you could widdle this thing up out of ear wax. I think $250 is a very reasonable price.

That would be worth my $250.

That would not be an hour or so of fabrication. Anyone who can make this in an hour from an uncut sheet of steel, all documented in an hour long film with no video cuts/splicing and offer a one year warranty, I'll give you $400 for this just to prove me wrong. That's $350 profit at $350/hr.

Im going to contact the one company monday to see if they maybe make one since alot of websites dont always have their current products up. And since the 8.8 is a very common axle being used under cj jeep models i figure somebody makes one.

I'm just saying it looks like it could be mass produced pretty cheaply. Long ago I worked for a trailer manufacturer. Massive presses would stamp and and cut metal into mounts, brackets and things at a rate of about 10 a minute. It took that long because we had to place the steel in there and retrieve the stamped part. Had a friend loose 3 fingers from those damn machines.

your right, One off'ing this thing would take a long time. But if you built a die, you could press out several dozen an hour, significantly reducing production costs. Look... its got a few bends and 3 "U" bolts. I can get a armored diff cover for under $100. I'm just not impressed for that money is all.

Considering they probably don't really sell a huge quantity of these and they did make the effort and put up the costs of design and production (or bought it from Nth Degree anyway), I still think it's a fair price. It's in line with the cost of most any other similar steel vehicle parts.

I will probably build my own, though, because I have more steel than money and get more satisfaction from building than buying. I've been looking around for all kinds of armor and will buy if it's really cheap but I'm not afraid to try my hand at fabricating any of it. I just have to find the time.

Time and tools is what im lacking. If I can find one at a fair price im all about buying one. I have a buddy who is into fab stuff and is looking into build armor for offroad vehicles. I see if he can build me one and maybe a couple to sell if the price is right.

The 8.8 axle tube is a quarter inch bigger then the 9 inch axle tube. Im not sure about the third member diameter difference between the two. Im sure you can bend the u-bolts towards each other once there over the axle but you might put them in such a angle that they might not be able to slide them in the holes on the skid plate or get the nuts on.
