03 XLT 2WD Has loud knock, any ideas??

Hello,
I have a 2003 XLT 2WD that recently (last few weeks) started making a sound that happens as motor is warming, but does not rise with RPM's and is intermittent. If I had to try and explain it, it sounds like when metal expands, it "pops" and appears to come from underneath near where the motor and trans meet. I cannot pin point it exactly, but it has begun to happen more often and everytime I start after the motor has cooled. I am no rookie when it comes to working on vehicles, but this is baffling me and I wanted to ask other owners if anyone has experienced this. Again, it sounds like someone has taken a hammer or something metalic and hit the CAST metal.

Any ideas?

bearing maybe, mine was so destroyed it was like ice stock in my wheels

Mine truck does this every now and then too, any luck figuring out what it was?
