4 hi, no 4 low, fuse resets 4hi (2001 sport trac)

Hello, i am new to the site and am quite happy with the info and my soon to be ability to help when possible, but right now, i have an issue- my 4 hi works for a while, then when i need it, it wont work, until i pull the fuse for the 4x4 in the left side of console panel, and it resets it, then will go into 4 hi no problem a few times(cycle), but never will go into 4 lo. tried in neutral, tried backing up ( i know the old ones had to go in reverse to disengage something?), nothing works. i am hoping it is something simple, and if it is the motor in the transfer case, i am capable of replacing it, i just dont want to have to! any ideas are appreciated, thanks for looking.

Could be as simple as the switch on the dash or the electric shift module on the side of the transfer case.

When it wont do anything at all, I figured out it is fuse number 35 (4x4 module) that I can pull, put back in (it doesnt blow) and then it will go into 4 hi again. But nothing happens when trying 4lo. And it only will go into 4hi for as long as it feels like it, then I have repeat pulling and putting back in.

The first( and easiest) thing to try is disconnecting and reconnecting (2 or 3 times) the shift module behind the right kick panel. The terminals sometimes oxidize and don't make good contact. if that doesn't help do the same thing to the connection at the shift motor. If you have to replace the shift motor it's mounted externally with 3 bolts so you should be able to do it with little/no problem.
