Questions about 95-01 axle interchangeability

I searched but couldn't find quite what I was looking for. I know 95-01 axles should be similar, but I want to make sure before I drop money on an axle that won't work.

I have a 99 and I've been trying to find a 2nd gen with 4.10 gears for an axle swap. I found a 97 with both the rear axle and the front differential. Would I be able to swap those into my 1999? I'm worried about compatibility with the speedometer with the rear and I read they changed the IFS a bit in 98. So if someone could clear that up for me, that would be great!

You need to look for a set from a 98-01. It seems most that 4x4 sports have 4.10s

the rear axle on a 95-97 will not have the speed sensor in it. the speed sensor on those years it in the t case. also, on 95 for sure (96 i am not totally sure) the front diff was a vacuum disconnect. the way it worked if i am correct is that for it to go into 4x4 was the axle engaged using motor vacuum, vs electronically on the t case. otherwise, physically they are all the same, and will bolt in. just like boomin said, if you want 4.10's hunt a sport down. they came with them from factory.

Dang, ok thanks guys!

EDIT: is the front diff the same in 97 then? If it doesnt have the vacuum disconnect and its swappable I might go snag that and keep looking for a rear axle.

97's are 50/50 trucks. What I mean by that is half way through the year they started making changes. Only real way to tell is just go look if it has the disco on it

Yes it does. The 95-97 has the ABS sensor in the rear axle, thats the same sensor the 98+ uses for the speedo.
