That is one of the advantages of EPAS. Since it is an electric motor, it does not create any engine drag like the old hydraulic pumps do. The EPAS runs off of the car's electrical system, which is charged by the alternator, which is more than likely clutched to reduce engine drag as much as possible by charging only when needed, improving gas mileage further. Ain't technology grand?

Although I'm not a technician, after reading what Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) does, I don't think it affects fuel mileage. I don't see where is has anything to do with deceleration or braking either. Happy motoring.

Whoa, slow down there cowboy. The little winky smiley face meant Peter was only kidding. We try to keep things light in this forum as it can get a bit tense at times when frustrations boil over. I am sure Peter meant no offense, as he is one of the more helpful people on this board.

Congratulations on your new ride! We love to see photos of each others Explorers, so post 'em up when you get a chance!

Boy did we ever get off on the wrong foot! As Vince mentioned, my statement, "stir up trouble with this initial post" was meant in jest. Therefore the .
I like to see new members joining up and have welcomed many of them to the Forum since I signed up. The members here are very helpful and eager to lend a hand when someone has a concern or question regarding their Explorer.

Looks like I missed the smiley face interpetation.
