I am a new Explorer Sport owner, had the car for two weeks and love it! The only complaint I have is about the fuel economy. I am only seeing an avg of 11mpg. Is anyone else seeing the same MPG?

Don't worry my Limited started out that way it slowly climed till the 2000 mark that's where I'm at now . Do a trip reset on your next fill up

Depending on where you are, cold weather has a very dramatic effect on fuel economy as well. With all the required conversion from metric to imperial etc, I figure I'm getting about 19 mpg (U.S) or 23 mpg (CDN) in a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving. Are you using regular or the recommended premium gas? I don't know if that may have an effect on mpg since engines now will sort of tune themselves to run on a lower grade.
It would also be helpful if you showed the model and year in your profile so members can see that info in the left column by your forum name. It would help in answering any future concerns/questions you may have.
Happy motoring.

If a lot of your driving is in town and sitting in traffic, that all averages in at 0 mpg. That said, assuming you mean that you got a brand new Explorer, the engines take a while to break in (like 10,000 miles) and then the mpg gets better.

I don't buy the break in mileage gain. I heard that the last few cars and gas mileage was always the same no matter how many miles it had. My sport is 13.9 in the city and I am more than happy. My last vehicle was a 11 Jeep grand cherokee with a hemi and it got 11.5mpg and was slower than this one. But it got 11.5 no matter how many miles were on it. I bought it new and traded it in with 28K miles and it never changed. Everyone on those boards said it would increase after oil changes and after a certain number of miles, it never did.

Hi sportowner,

I'm glad to hear that you're loving your Sport! Since you're concerned about your fuel economy, I recommend checking out our tips to save a little money at the pump: http://owner.ford.com/servlet/ContentServer?cid=1097497476823&pagename=Owner%2FPage%2FArticleDetail&recid=1251387049618&parentheadlineimageid=1233677327701&parentrightrecid=1239636411265

Thank you for the feedback. Called the dealership today and told them of the issue and they want to look at the car. I realize the car is new, only 600miles, but it has been through 3 tanks of gas, averaging 200 miles per tank. The car we owned before this was a Volvo XC90 and that car averaged about 16 miles to the gallon. I would be happy with that type of average.

The driving is mostly city driving, but not overly aggressive on the gas pedal.

We will see what the dealership says or does after we have them look at the car. I am encouraged to hear most owners are seeing better gas mileage and hopefully the mpg will increase.

I'm getting 18mpg city. Heavy foot. 11mpg....... wow. Not Good. You must sit in traffic all day to get that kind of mileage.

My limited started out around the 16mpg mark for the first 10000 miles. It is now averaging 21mpg. Every engine is different. But getting 200 miles to a tank? For canadians that's roughly 321 km. I'm getting around 340 miles to a tank in my Sport.

Is that 18 mpg based on our gallon or U.S. gallon? Don't forget our gallon is roughly 20% larger than the U.S. gallon.

Peter,
That's a direct conversion between our L/100km to a US gallon. Used a conversion tool which converts litres to US gallons. In order to directly relate it to the topic at hand.

1 US gallon = 3.78541178 L

Just to confirm what Peter says about cold weather. It has warmed up here in Eastern Canada. I'm now getting an extra 30-40km per tank when it's above 6 degrees celsius.

I'm looking forward to that warming also. It has been around 6 C here the past few days but going to -3 or in a few days. After last fill up I think it showed I was good for about 570 km which is down from the summer readings of around 630 or so. Of course that figure is dependant upon your type of driving on the previous tank. Mine is fairly consist with shorter trip during the summer since I'm not running to the city arenas.:)
Putting my OEM 20's back on at the end of the month and that should help a little bit also.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one getting low mpg on a new Sport.I've had mine since the 25th of Feb. and got an 11.5 mpg avg on the first tank .That was with gas from the dealer probably 87 so I filled it with 93 this tank full.
So far averaging 15.5 but that's including some highway miles, the first tank full was all around town.
Let us know how you make out at the dealer I might be going the same route if they come up with something.
Thanks
Lou
