2013 Explorer Recall 13S04 FUEL DELIVERY MODULE REPLACEMENT

Just in case others didn't see the post in the other thread

Ford Motor is recalling 465,000 of its current model year cars due to a fuel leak that poses a fire risk.

The company said the models include 2013 Ford Explorer, Taurus, Flex, Fusion, Interceptor Utility and Interceptor Sedan, as well as the Lincoln MKS, MKT and MKZ.

Ford said it is not aware of any incidents of fire due to the fuel leak, or of any injuries caused by the defect. Ford said it had received 600 complaints about the fuel leak from customers as of March 31.

I read a few articles but none had any detail. Apparently Ford won't have enough parts for everyone until September. I couldn't find any details on what the issue was other than "fuel delivery module replacement" (that is the extent to what you'll find on the my ford site). Nothing about what I should do...should I contact the dealer now, or wait for a letter?

My thought is to wait unless you are smelling fuel like some are. Right now, with vacations coming up, I don't want to be without our new car.

I'll mention it the next time I'm in for an oil change and get on their list to get the parts and wait for them to come in before I'm willing to leave my car. The repair should be fairly quick once parts are in stock.

This article says "Ford says a connector from the fuel tank to the fuel line is the source of the leak. Customers could smell gas or see a leak on the ground. The company says no fires or crashes have been reported because of the problem.

Dealers will replace the fuel delivery module, which includes the connector, a Ford spokeswoman said."

I took delivery towards the end of April of my 13 limited. Ran first maintenance check yesterday and no recall came up. Since ford has been aware of this issue for over a year I wonder at what pt if any are new vehicles getting corrected parts put in. Mine was a special order so wasn't sitting on lot for months.

Just scheduled my appointment... Guess if you bash ford on the other thread that's cool, but if you stand up for ford your post gets deleted:-)

Anyway, good on ford for being proactive... Other manufacturers delay recalls, ford takes great expense to get the product fixed.

Damn, I guess my Fusion is affected. No wonder I smell gas when I park it in the garage. I best park it outside then for now.

Do you think the 2011 - 2012 Explorers have this issue too? I'm guessing this because they shouldn't have made any changes to the fuel pump delivery system for the Explorer? or is this a manufacturing defect?

You never know what little changes they might make. Why did some of the 2013's start to have that fan noise? That fan that is part of the cabin temperature sensing system. You would think that it would be the same as the 2011 and 2012 models but yet only the 2013's appear to have this issue.

Checked with my dealer and was told that they don't have the parts on hand, but if you smell or see gas, take it in and Ford will expedite the parts.

All the different parts of the car building process arrive in marked batches
from many different vendors.
If the parts are never tweaked during the coming model year due to bad design, its still a crap shoot.

Some things will still work even if designed badly and cheaper parts are used, instead of going with say- the tougher plastic or fiber spec for those parts. But they may not work long enough.

In building the car at the plant, overall basic quality begins and dies on the luck of the draw of particular batches of parts that end up being used for each car made-and how well each item in each batch was made.

I had the opportunity today to have the recall explained to me in detail. Its amazing how the media has warped the facts.

On the top of the fuel pump there is a connection nipple to the fuel line made out of plastic. This part is provided to Ford by an outside vendor, Ford doesn't make it.

When the nipple was being manufactured the QC on the plastic composition was not correct and the Ford build specs were not met.

The part was installed and the poorly made plastic nipple started to deteriorate as more fuel was pushed through the connection nipple. The higher your mileage, the more fuel is passed through the nipple, the quicker it deteriorates and your nipple cracks and leaks causing fuel smell.

Low use vehicles, pass less fuel through the nipple, the deterioration is slower and doesn't produce the cracks and leaks.

This was caught months ago and the newest builds had new parts installed. Not sure what the cutoff was but it was some time ago near the beginning of the year.

The pump sits directly under the second row seats in the Explorer.

There is little or no risk of fire as the pump is not around any heat source that can cause combustion.

To ensure the parts aren't confused.

Gray nipple is GOOD (new part)

Black nipple is BAD (old part)

So Ford takes the PR hit when it was actually another vendor making a substandard part that didn't meet the required specs.

Thanks Sgt, is it the nipple only that needs replacing or the whole pump?

how long should it take for the dealer to swap the fuel pump out?

the receptionist at my local dealer said it would take a couple days to change and is going to get me a loaner.

I figured it shouldn't take more that a couple hours ...

When I asked I was told 1HR for Explorer and 1.5hr for Taurus

Oh and they did have their supplier spool up extra production before this release.

Thanks Sgt for the information. I also shared this with our local Explorer Forum. Based from your post, my unit would fall under:

"Low use vehicles, pass less fuel through the nipple, the deterioration is slower and doesn't produce the cracks and leaks."

My VIN still doesn't show any recall notice when I checked at the site.

Poor Ford has to take the blame for this one. I knew it was a manufacturing defect. There is no way 2011 and 2012 don't have the problem but the 2013 does except if it was a manufacturing defect.

Thanks for the tip sgt. I'll go look under my car now to check.

Yours may not be effected because they caught it back months ago so you may be lucky.

I remember a "Stop Ship" was ordered back around December so maybe that was related. Only a guess though, nothing confirmed.

Can anyone tell me where the fuel pump is and if this is something we can easily inspect?
