Hey all,
Well recently I've been playing heck with my 94 trying to get things back to normal. I had posted a thread about my disaster issue with my computer when I tried installing a Hypertech chip not to long ago.(Hypertech=new computer i beleive it was) Well things still are all messed up. Ok so here's what I'm dealing with.... I have a 94 Explorer that I have a KKM truerev intake on it with exahust and several other mods done. Recently, I tried installing a chip and ended up frying my computer, a cam timing sensor (I believe it's located towards the back of my block) and a temperature cooling sensor. The later two items are what my new computer spit out on my mechanics code reader. My mechanic also cleaned the MAS, my throttle body, and my injectors. He also installed new plugs and plug wires. It is also important to note that before they installed the computer they noticed a strong smell of gas in the engine oil along with about a quart in the engine oil contents. They did change that as well. It seems to smell less of gas now. My new computer lacks the hypertech chip. I also had a brand new Jasper tranny installed which had it's own seperate issues which all took place at about the same time. When I had the transmission place install my tranny I had them install a permacool temp gauge and external filter kit. Well they installed everything perfectly except they failed to test the trans fluids flow after the filter which in turn made my tranny get really hot. (literally boiling on the dipstick!) When I took it back to them they claimed to have tested it and flushed the system of all of the dirty fluid and fixed the cooling problem. (Which is noticable on the temperature gauge-- it actually works now) They found out that the filter supplied by permacool was an oil filter that had a one way check valve in it that didn't allow for propper oil flow to my new trans cooler. Now that you have a rough description of the mess I'm dealing with, what is currently ailing my poor truck is at 4K RPMs it seems to hesitate and in neutral it almost acts like it has a rev limitter on it and will if left on 4K will bounce slightly. When you drive it if you do a hole shot in any gear it will accellerate fine up until 4 grand then the tach will bounce 3 times followed by a slight power loss and then it will shift into the following gear. I have no check engine lights nor any codes appearing on two sepearte computers. I had my friend from Ford test it on his computer and we have drawn a blank on to what may be the issue. We not only ran a diagnostic test but also an electric flow test through all of the sensors. They all checked out fine. Any suggestions would greatly help. I am greatly hopeful as I know Ford will pound it to me if I have to take it to them. stupid question maybe but have you used other than your tach to determine engine speed? i dont think they fail much but maybe with that chip frying something else it messed up your tach. who knows, or maybe it fried whatever tells the comp to shut spark off at 5500 rpm like it should.

We haven't tried that yet...
Although I'd think Ford's comp would of given a code for that. I'll soon find out the answer to this mess though. I'm going to take it down tomarrow to Ford and let another tech look over it. I'll mention that to them about shutting off spark at 5500 RPM and see what they have to say. The impression that you get at 4000 RPMs is that you lose two cylindars and then all the sudden gain them back when it shifts. It's messed up. I think it may be a sensor that tells the comp when to have the tranny shift at a certain speed though. It could even be a stall converter in the tranny for that matter. Speaking of converters do you thing a gutted converter would cause it to do anything like that? If we don't figure it out cheaply it's going up for sale. It's a sad thing to do but it's starting to become very frustrating and expensive. Thanks for the tip. Happy wheelin', Joe |

i really dont see why a gutted catalytic converter would cause that, maybe on a mustang because i think they put a 02 sensor after the cats. EFI can sometimes be more trouble than its worth depending on where you live and what you use it for. My suggestion?? before you sell it just to get rid of it.... swap in a carb'd 302!!! probably cheaper in the long run neways : ) he he he...
well good luck with it!! __________________ 92 xlt <---- *sniff* gone ![]() 98 xlt 5.0 AWD |

Found the cause...
It's been a while ago since I posted anything but I thought I'd update you all on this situation...
Seems that what was causeing all of my hesitation was a bad neutral position saftey switch... It took us forever to finally figure it out and it was only after a simple test I preformed that we found it. It made the world of difference though. The transmission place was shocked too. LOL I also recently changed my plugs back to boche (when I had all of those issues before the mechanic used cheap champion plugs). When I changed the plugs my number one cylinder was completely melted and fouled all to heck... Boy did that help increase my power and torque.
