WIN2000 Problem

Hey,
i am glad to see this forum open. too bad I didn't think of it so I could be a moderator. Here is what I have:
Abit BH-6 mobo. with Win2000 and a 56K USRobotics PCI modem. the modem worked fine with WIN98.
Also have a Abit KG-7 RAID Modo with Win2000 and it has the exact same problem. When you go into control panel under the "other devices" heading it says:
"PCI serial port" with an exclamation point by it.
I have done all I can think of....I have all the latest windows updates, have tried removing and reinstalling modem, tried DLing the latest modem drivers, tried 3 different modems (all PCI), other PCI stuff works (Ethernet card, sound card) I even tried drop-kicking the computer out 2nd story window. Nothing seems ot help. At school I just sort of forgot about it since I have the ethernet access and a nice T3 line but here at home i am dying! I can only run an old 28.8 ISA card PLEASE HELP!!!! lol

Did you try to go to the Manufacturer website and download the W2K drivers?

Do not load the drivers.. take them out and try to see if the OS detects it. If it doesnt try using the "standard modem" drivers that are preloaded in the OS. I have had the same prob b4 but we just went out and got the cheapest modem we could find to replace it ( this was at work= work money)

Try removing the modem (In Windows, not physically) and restart your PC. If the system auto detects a new PCI device, install Win2K driver for the modem.

Did you upgrade to Win2K just recently?

If everything fails and you are certain that the modem isn't defective, you should email or call US Robotics.

Heres the deal...

the original release of W2K did not include support for older hardware ( some only 8mo old ) in the HCL ( Hardware Compatibility List ) it was prior to service pack1 that they released a revised HCL. only 3com devices were included in the original not USRobotics (3Com bought them out) there were also a bunch of devices not included.. to see if a device is in the new HCL go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...ch/devices.asp and search for the device... there should be new drivers for them there, if not you need to go to the Manufacturer for the device...

you can remove and add the device all you want but without the proper driver it won't work correctly.

you might be able to get it to work using generic device drivers..

Windows 2000

I have also had a few compatablility issues although with a little patience I have been able to fix them. I have only had 2000 for about a month and I am about to change back to 98 because of all these compatability issues. I was told it is everything 98 is, but on the NT platform. If this was true then there wouldn't be all these issues. So far I haven't seen any difference except for the fade option and pinball. Oh, well, except for the MAJOR PITA issues.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Oh well, I am done bitching. Just sick of reinstalling crap a hundred times.

WOw, that link really helped out! everything is running fine now.

2001expsport,
Win2000 IS everything 98 was except on a NT platform.....that is the reason for these issues. NT is a totally different OS then 98, thus there will be issues. SO far i feel 2000 is a lot more reliable after you get past the issues in th ebeginning. One major difference is in 98 you can run Winmodems, while in NT you can;t...if that is what is causing anyone problems it's just a metter of buying a better modem.

Well sometimes the things that you can't "see" are what really count. Win2000 may look like 95,98,ME, and may have support for some of their programs, but that's about it. It's alot more stable (crash-resistant is what I call it) and it's alot more secure if you're connected to an untrusted network (the net).

Right, a friend told me it is very stable and I have yet to have any issues with that. One issue I do have which any of you may be able to help me with is shutting down or restarting. When I shut down/restart it goes thru the series of window(saving settings/now shutting down windows). After that last window closes it hangs and I have to shut it off manually. When I had done a fresh install of 2000 it would restart and shut down properly. After installing hardware and software I have aquired the problem. Unfortunately I don't know what is causing it. At one point I thought it was my sound card. I removed it and the software and it shut down normally. With it installed the problem reappears. It is a new soundscard and already had 2000 drivers and software on the install disk. The manufacturers site does not have a newer driver than what I have. Anyone have this problem?

2001 I am willing to bet that you have set a sound to play when you shutdown windows. Go to control panel, then click sounds, then turn the shutdown sound off. See if that fixes it.

Does 2000 have a "Windows Update" feature? If so you may want to see if they have an update concerning shutting down IDE hard disks. I seem to remember something to that effect being on there a few weeks ago.

Also, do you have Veritas Backup Exec or Prassi CD Write?

Either of those programs could potentially cause the machine to hang at shutdown.

Just download Service pack 2, and all that stuff about saving settings while is just something that comes from running off an NT platform.

Win2k is a very good OS. Its got its bugs, but what doesnt.

To get a list of whats compatible and whats not go to:
www.ntcompatible.com
surf around there, its got alot of info.

Yeah Win2000 does have windoes update...go into internet explorer, then tools, then windows update. I run it at least once a month on all my machines and it keeps them running happy. BTW: What sound card are you running that is causing the problem? Good luck!
